SICAS Interview with Mr. Lu Zhongping—Head of Admission Office of Donghua University (DHU)
SICAS—Study in China Admission System, has established reliable partnerships with more than 200 first-rate universities in China, including Donghua Univerisity. On Sep 6, 2011, SICAS CEO Ms Zhanglu and SICAS School Liaison Department staff members met with Mr. Lu Zhongping-- Head of Admission Office of DHU, during which he accepted an exclusive SICAS interview.
What follows is a transcript of the conversation which has been slightly condensed, and edited for clarity:
Host: First of all, thank you obviously for your time, Mr. Lu. Could you please give us a brief introduction of DHU?
Mr. Lu: Sure. Located in Shanghai, Donghua University consists of the Yan’an Rd. Campus, the Songjiang Campus and the Xinhua Rd. Campus, covering a total area of 147 hectares. The beautiful campuses have gained her the title of “Garden-like Unit of Shanghai”. Founded in June 1951, Donghua University was originally named East-China Textile Institute of Science and Technology. In September 1985, she changed her name to China Textile University and changed once again to Donghua University in August 1999. She has been a state-key university since 1960 and is one of the first educational institutions in China that have been authorized to confer all the three-level degrees: bachelor, master and doctorate.
Host: Please tell us about the teaching and education of DHU.
Mr. Lu: Well, known as the cradle for textile professionals in China, Donghua University adheres to her good school spirit of "strictness, diligence, concreteness and innovation" and fully implements her idea of "all-around development of students is the center of everything". She aims to educate talents of both ability and moral integrity with her excellent teaching and management. In recent years Donghua University has been deepening the new reform on the credit system. Based on the common sense education, she carries out "specialist education with broad coverage and flexibility" to all the students. Individual competence-based instruction has been made to those who have more capabilities. Students are satisfied with the new education mode for having met their needs for individual development and the need for training of versatile talents.
Host: Sounds interesting. What about programs offered at DHU?
Mr. Lu: Currently, DHU is officially authorized by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China to offer a variety of programs to International students, including 47 bachelor's degree programs, 50 master's degree programs, 29 doctoral programs as well as non-degree programs for learning Chinese language and culture.
Host: Ah, great! Are there any English-medium programs?
Mr. Lu: Of course yes. Bachelor's degree program Bachelor of Economics in International Trade (BIT in English) and a total of 29 doctoral degree programs are provided specially for those who worry about language barrier.
Host: Well, it seems that DHU really stands in the shoes of students. Apart from programs, what do you think are attractive to International students?
Mr. Lu: First of all, Donghua University has made great contribution to promoting the economic and social development of Shanghai and the nation. It won dozens of awards including National Award for Advances in Science and Technology, National Award for Creation and Invention, and provincial and ministerial Awards for Advances in Science and Technology. Quite a few teachers won various titles such as National 100 Young Scientists, National Top 10 Fashion Designers, Shanghai Top 10 Scientific Elates and Shanghai Top 6 Inventers. In 2000 and 2001, 2 of its scientific research projects are listed in Top 10 Advances of Science and Technology in the Institutions in China. Besides, the International Cultural Exchange School of DHU is a big family comprising of students from all over the world. Here members of this family will receive a full range of support from ICES and International Student Association, and will go through a colorful campus life by joining various social clubs and cultural exchange activities.
