SICAS Interview with Mr. Wu Dilong--Vice Dean of the School of International Studies of Changsha University of Science and Technology (CUST)

SICAS, which is efficient, accurate and safe, has established reliable partnerships with more than 200 first-rate universities in China, including Changsha University of Science & Technology (CUST). On Nov 7, 2011, SICAS CEO Ms Zhanglu and SICAS School Liaison Department staff members met with Mr. Wu Dilong--Vice Dean of the School of International Studies of Changsha University of Science & Technology (CUST), during which he accepted an exclusive SICAS interview.

What follows is a transcript of the conversation which has been slightly condensed, and edited for clarity:

Host: First of all, thank you obviously for your time, Mr. Wu. Could you please give us a brief introduction of CUST?
Mr. Wu: Sure. Changsha University of Science & Technology (CUST) is an engineering-centered multidisciplinary university integrating engineering, science, management, economics, liberal arts and law, with strong disciplinary advantages and prominent features in the industries of communications, electric power and water conservancy. The university is jointly established by the Central Government and Hunan Provincial Government, mainly under the administration of Hunan Province.

Host: Where is CUST?
Mr. Wu: Well, CUST is located in Changsha city of Hunan province, a well-known historical and cultural city with a history of more than two thousand years. Changsha boasts over-thousand-year-old Yuelu Academy and Mawangdui Han Dynasty Tombs, bamboo slips of Wu in ancient Three Kingdoms. It is also a modern city which can develop magnetic levitated train and super computer. Changsha is the hometown of outstanding talents in large number, such as the late Chairman Mao Zedong, the late Deputy Chairman Liu Shaoqi, former Premier Zhu Rongji, and the late hero Lei Feng and so on. Changsha's geographic location is excellent with Yangtze River and Dongting Lake (including scenery spots as Yueyang Tower) to the north and Hengshan Mountain to the south (one of China's Five Sacred Mountains). It takes only several hours by train to the world heritage---Zhangjiajie National Geographic Park. Zhangjiajie is known as "nature labyrinth" where "each step takes one into a whole new world of breathtaking beauty." With an annual mean temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, warm winters and cool summers, Zhangjiajie is fit for tours all the year round.

Host: Sounds interesting. How about living and learning of CUST?
Mr. Wu: CUST offers two types of accommodation to International students, single room and double room, equipped with kitchen, washroom and broadband Internet. Students can access to modern Chinese Language Lab nearby. Overseas students are exposed to Chinese culture, and may experience local customs and culture through regular extracurricular activities in urban and rural areas.

Host: Ah, great! What courses do CUST offer to International students?
Mr. Wu: All course provided at CUST are taught in English for bachelor’s degree: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Engineering. Therefore, International students don’t have to worry about language problems.

Host: Please tell us about International cooperation of CUST.
Mr. Wu: OK. CUST plays an active role in International exchanges and has established exchange and cooperation with institutions of higher learning and research institutes in a score of countries and regions including the USA, UK, France, Russia, Canada, South Korea, Japan and Australia. It has expanded cooperation of various kinds at different levels. It is accredited to enroll international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In the past years, more than 400 foreign teachers and experts have come to CUST for teaching and lectures. 500 staff members have been sent abroad for studies, international conferences, visits and lectures.
What’s more, CUST is active in exploring international education and talent training modes, has jointly established Confucius Institute with the University of Liberia, and has cooperated with enterprises in training organized international students of bachelor’s degree. CUST is one of ten Pilot “Training Bases of International Talents” granted by China Oversea-Education Scholars Development Foundation, and has sent more than 100 excellent students to study in France, UK, USA, Russia and South Korea in recent years.

Host: It seems that CUST is surely committed itself to becoming an International university.
