Happy Teachers’ Day: Celebrating Teachers in China and Around the World

Every year on 10 September, China celebrates Teachers’ Day, a special occasion to recognise the people who dedicate themselves to education and to thank them for their contribution to students and society.

China’s Teachers’ Day was officially established in 1985 and is celebrated on 10 September each year. The occasion reflects the long-standing respect for teachers and education in Chinese culture.

One well-known Chinese verse captures this spirit beautifully:

“春蚕到死丝方尽,蜡炬成灰泪始干。”
“The silkworm spins its silk until the end of its life; the candle burns until its wax is gone.”

Written by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin, the verse has often been used to describe the dedication and selflessness of teachers. Like the silkworm and the candle, teachers give their time, knowledge and energy to help others learn and grow.

For international students, a teacher’s influence can reach far beyond the classroom.

A teacher may be the first person to help a student understand a new subject, learn a new language or adapt to a different education system. For students preparing to study in China, teachers can also become an important bridge between their home country and China.

This is particularly meaningful to SICAS.

SICAS works with universities, education organisations and partners in different countries to help more international students access educational opportunities in China. Behind this international education network are many teachers and education professionals who introduce Chinese universities to students, provide guidance, answer questions and encourage young people to explore opportunities in China.

We would therefore like to extend our Teachers’ Day wishes not only to teachers in Chinese universities and schools, but also to the teachers and educators at our overseas partner institutions.

Whether they are teaching in China or supporting students thousands of kilometres away, their work helps connect classrooms, cultures and communities.

For some students, the journey to study in China may begin with a teacher. It may start with a Chinese language lesson, an introduction to a Chinese university, or simply a teacher encouraging a student to consider an opportunity they had never thought possible.

This is where international education becomes meaningful: when knowledge and opportunities cross borders, and when people help others take the next step.

At SICAS, one of our goals is to help make Chinese education accessible to students from countries around the world. We believe that international education should not be limited by geography. Through cooperation with Chinese universities and overseas education partners, we hope to create more opportunities for students to learn, exchange ideas and build their futures through education in China.

On this Teachers’ Day, we thank every teacher who has helped a student take the next step.

To the teachers in China, to the teachers at our overseas partner institutions, and to educators everywhere who continue to inspire their students:

Happy Teachers’ Day!
