Geography and climate

Yuxi is a prefecture-level city located at 23°19′~24°53′ north latitude and 101°16′~103°09′ east longtitude.Yuxi is a quiet city located in China's beautiful Yunnan province. Yunnan is home to two thirds of China's minority peoples and some of the most beautiful scenery to be found anywhere on earth! Yuxi sits in the heart of Yunnan, south of the provincial capital of Kunming. There are 25 ethnic minority groups in this city, including Yi, Hani, Dai, Hui, Bai, Mongolian, Miao, and Laku. Altogether, they account for over 30% of the city's two and a half million residents.

Yuxi enjoys a climate of several different types from tropical to temperate climate, with a distinct plateau monsoon climate. The annual average temperature is 15.6℃-23.8 ℃. January is the coldest month with a temperature between 8℃-16℃, and June or July is the hottest months with a temperature between 20℃-28.6℃. Economy

Yuxi is situated in a fertile agricultural region and is one of the fastest growing cities in China. In 2001, the city won an Honor Award in Analysis & Planning by the American Society of Landscape Architects. In 2004, UNIDO held a Workshop on Seed Treatment Technology-one of only two in China.

Yuxi is the home of the tobacco manufacturer, the Hongta Group, which was named after the Red Pagoda which sits atop a nearby hill. The pagoda was originally white, but was painted red during the Cultural Revolution. The region's tobacco is of high quality due to the fact that there are over 2300 hours of sunlight a year, adequate rainfall in the summer, and excellent soil that produces a plethora of other fruits and vegetables. The region has also begun producing wine, which could prove to be quite palatable in the next decade or so.All in all, Yuxi is a very promising city with its abundant resources.

Culture

Yuxi was founded in 960 AD before Yunnan province was part of China. The city is quite anonymous when it comes to the history books - not having been involved inany notable politcal events, wars or conflicts. However, Yuxi was once the core area of Yunnan Province during the Previous Qin Dynasty (period before 221BC).Perhaps the most exciting incident that occured here was the pagoda being painted red during the Cultural Revolution.

Yuxi has its own dialect which belongs to Southwest dialect which is a sub branch of Northern Dialect. It’s not easy to understand for Mandarin speakers. There are also many traditional festivals in Yuxi. For instance, the traditional folk festival of Han in Yuxi is held annually to celebrate Chinese New Year. The festival, also called Rice Noodle Festival or Lamp Festival, gets its name from the traditional activities of eating rice noodles, performing traditional opera with lamps as props on that day.
