College of Foreign Studies


The predecessor of the College of Foreign Studies was the Department of Foreign Language and Literature founded in 1927. A galaxy of famous scholars including Mr. Ye Gongchao, Mr. Liang Shiqiu, Mr. Hong Shen, Mr. Chen Ruilin, Mr. Sun Dayu, Mr. Qian Zhongshu, Mr. Chen Da and Mr. Xu Guozhang used to work as deans or teachas professors in this time-honored department. Being one of the first departments authorized by the State Council’s Degree Conferment Committee to confer master’s degree, the department began to enroll and train graduate students each year from the autumn of 1980. The Programme of Master’s Degree in English Language and Literature concentrates on the study of translation and is one of the earliest programs at Jinan University to confer master degree. The tutors who help and supervise the study and research of graduate students for master degree are Prof. Zeng Zhaoke, Prof.Dai Weihua, Prof. Liang Donghua, Prof. Bao Jiaren, Prof. Wei Jingyi, Prof. Lu Zhi and Prof. Li Guoqing, and associate professors Ou Weiguang, Chen Yuanguang, Wang Xinjie, Pu Ruoqian, Duan Kaicheng, Fu Yonggang, Lü Yingchun and others.
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature and the College English Teaching Center of Jinan University merged into the present in May 2001. The College of Foreign Studies was established in May 2001. Now The College incorporates 4 departments: English Department I, English Department II (Business-oriented), Japanese Language and Literature Department and the College English Teaching Department.
Currently, the College has a staff of 150 members, among whom 8 are full professors, 49 associate professors, 51 lecturers, 23 assistants and 19 administrative staff. Now among a total of 673 undergraduates, 60 are overseas Chinese students and 410 are from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. 34 full-time graduates are doing their MA degree program.
The College of Foreign Studies is one of the testing bases of BEC (Business English Certificate) authorized by Cambridge University and it is approved and designated by the Examination Center of State Ministry of Education as one of the training centers on BEC. 
In addition, the College also offers part-time training programs and on-the-job MA programs.
