4. Residence Permit
For some visas – e.g. X (study visa) and L (travel visa) – the visa only gets you into the country, it does not allow you to stay. Once you enter mainland China on one of those visas, in general you have 30 days get your residence permit in order to be able to stay in the country legally. The residence permit serves as a multi-entry visa: once you have one you can leave and enter the country whenever you want, during the term of that visa.
International students with X visa are required to apply for residence permit within 30 days after their arrival in China. For an international student with an F visa or an L visa that studies for less than 6 months in China, neither residence permit nor health examination is required during the term of that visa. If you are not very clear about this, we suggest you show your passport to the teachers in the office of ICES and ask their opinions.

The Exit-Entry Administration of Shanghai Public Security Bureau will come to SUFE to provide visa application service, which will be arranged by ICES of SUFE during the registration period of each new semester. The schedule will be noticed by ICES. Please pay attention.
