School of Foreign Languages and Mass Communication

The School of Languages and Communication Studies (SLCS) was founded in June, 2009 when the former School of Humanities and Sciences was restructured. The current departments of SLCS include Foreign Languages and Communication Studies. SLCS is also composed of three divisions, namely, the College English Teaching Division I and Division II as well as the Division of Foreign Languages Teaching for Graduates to fulfill its task to offer foreign language learning courses for both undergraduates and graduates from other schools of Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU).  SLCS also has under it the Media Center for Foreign Languages Teaching, the Institute of Language and Culture, the Institute of British and American Literatures, as well as the Institute of Applied Communication.

SLCS has more than 120 faculty members, of which there are 7 full professors, 30 associate professors and 12 master candidate supervisors. About 35% of our faculty members are awarded the honor of "BJTU’s Outstanding Course Teacher". We offer two master degree programs in foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, as well as in English language and literature; and two undergraduate programs in English and communication studies. Over 450 students are currently registered in the undergraduate and graduate programs of study in SLCS.

"Comprehensive English", the course offered for the English majors by the Department of Foreign Languages, is honored as "Excellent Course of BJTU" while the area of study in communication studies is developed as a special area of BJTU. The course "College English" for non-English majors has won a first-class award in Beijing and a national second-class award as well as the honors of "Excellent College English Course in Beijing" and "National Excellent College English Course".

SLCS has been actively engaged in both national and international academic exchange and cooperation and has forged cooperative and friendly ties with both its national and international partners such as City University of Hong Kong, Flinders University in Australia, Montclair State University in New Jersey and Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts in the United States, as well as the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

In recent years SLCS has undertaken several important education and teaching reform programs supported by the Ministry of Education, the program for "The 11th 5-Year Plan" of Beijing Municipality and the teaching reform programs funded by BJTU.

SLCS’s faculty members have published many textbooks and scholarly monographs and dozens of academic papers in leading international and national journals. Our faculty members have organized several cutting-edge academic seminars which have exerted a wide influence in the relevant fields.
