Beijing University of Technology was founded in 1960. It is a key university under the administration of the Beijing municipal government, which has established a multi-disciplinary academic structure. The structure primarily offers various programs and also involves in diversified academic research in the fields of science, engineering, economics, management, liberal arts and law. In the year 1981, Beijing University of Technology was approved by the Ministry of Education to become one of the first Master degree awarding units. Then in 1985, it became one of the PhD degree awarding units. In December 1996, Beijing University of Technology was officially listed as one of the 100 universities for key development in the 21st century by passing the national "211 Project" pre-trial.

College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) has three departments, including architecture, urban planning and industrial design. Meanwhile, there are four institutes which research on architectural design, urban planning, industrial design, urban lighting planning and design, and four research centers, i.e. Beijing Urban Engineering Safety Mitigation Centre, Green Building and Urban Environmental Technology Centre, World Cultural Heritage Conservation Centre, Public Art Design Centre. Besides, CAUP owns two state-level academic institutions, i.e. the Academic Committee of Urban Safety & Disaster Mitigation Planning, Urban Planning Society of China, and the Committee on Education and Training, China Illuminating Engineering Society. The College has set up eight main research directions: public building design, historical buildings and their environmental protection and re-use, architecture and urban green environmental technology, urban and rural planning, Beijing urban renewal, landscape planning, urban disaster prevention and mitigation, industrial products research and development design.

At present, CAUP has 79 faculty members, among whom 62 are full teaching faculty, 4 are doctoral tutors, 12 are professors, and 21 are associate professors. A total of 45.16 percent of the teaching faculty members have doctorate degree. In recent years, teachers at CAUP have completed over 50 academic books and 600 academic papers, and have received three national funding, three Beijing Natural Science Funding and five "11 5" supporting projects, two 863 sub-projects, 11 provincial research projects and more than 400 engineering and planning projects.

CAUP was commissioned by the Beijing Municipal Government and relevant departments of the projects including: Beijing Urban Water System Reform (Urban Design Awards), Beijing Old City 25 protected areas conservation planning, height control planning of the historic city of Beijing, Chang'an Street landscape renovation, underground space planning of central Beijing, Beijing Central District Regulatory Plan , the village system planning of Tongzhou District, the village system planning of Changping District and so on. By cooperation with the College of Architecture, University of Iowa, US, CAUP applied for the US National Foundation-funded project: “By using Three-dimensional technology to represent real urban environment in order to support and evaluate Beijing city planning” and “Ways and methods of historic buildings protection”, which is Ford Foundation funded project. The industrial design department of CAUP participated in “Transformation of traditional industries”,“Platform design services guide”and other national key projects. The numbers of cities of urban disaster prevention or urban lighting master planning gets the Leading position in China. In addition, CAUP has gained more than 30 major competition awards.

Until now, our college offers master’s degree in architectural design & theory and urban planning & design. The department of architecture has a five-year academic structure for undergraduate students, which enrolled since 1980. Urban planning also has a five-year academic structure, and industrial design has a four-year academic structure. The department of architecture has got through the evaluation by the National Assessment of Vocational Education of Architecture, respectively in 1998, 2002, 2006, and graduates granted as Bachelor of Architecture. CAUP now has 47 master students of engineering, 32 foreign students (including 6 postgraduate students). The college has trained numbers of inter-disciplinary talents who have solid theoretical foundation, a wide range of knowledge and strong practical competence.

Since its foundation, CAUP has made great progress in international academic exchanges. It gradually builds up an all-round exchanges and cooperation platform of teaching, research cooperation, and exchange of undergraduate and postgraduate students, instead of focusing on the abroad study of teachers. CAUP has established relations with many world class universities and institutes, such as University of Melbourne, U.S. Iowa State University, University of Milan, Tokyo University and Yonsei University. In virtue of its great international cooperation resource, CAUP has been exchanging students for four years to carry out short-term co-workshop activities. In 2006, CAUP assisting the Architectural Society of China successfully hosted the 12th Asian Congress of Architects.

The running thoughts of CAUP: “Scientific orientation, Identify the target, Exert advantages, Characteristic education”. We are trying our best to build a high standard college of Architecture and Urban Planning in China.
