Chemistry

College of Chemistry of Sichuan University has a long history over one hundred years, which can date back to 1907 when it was established as chemistry class of the Science Department of the Sichuan School of Higher Education. Numerous distinguished scholars and experts of chemistry have been teaching and conducting research here, thus fostering outstanding graduates, who have been very successful in their careers, generation after generation.

Nowadays, the college is one of the National Centers for Talents Training in Fundamental Science Research and Teaching. A comprehensive managing system has been established for teaching, research and industrial development. The undergraduate program in the college includes chemistry major and applied chemistry major. The chemistry major covers inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, polymer chemistry and physics, while the applied chemistry major encompasses areas such as radiochemistry, environmental chemistry, green chemistry and chemico biology. On the level of graduate education, College of Chemistry offers master's programs and doctoral programs for all the fields in chemistry. Several interdisciplinary programs have also been established for the areas of environmental chemistry, applied chemistry, industrial catalysis, pesticide science, material science, and so on. In addition, the college has established a postdoctoral training program, accepting newly graduated doctoral students as postdoctoral research associates in their interested research groups. Chemistry is one of the key disciplines constructed by 211 Project and 985 Project. Among the different majors, organic chemistry is the national key discipline, green chemistry, polymer chemistry and physics, organic chemistry and physical chemistry are the key disciplines in Sichuan province.

The college has 166 faculties and staffs, among them there are 4 part-time academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 Cheng Kong professors, 1 member of National Teaching Guidance Committee, 4 awardees of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 first-level candidates of New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, 9 awardees of New/Trans-Century Training Programme Foundation for the Talents by MOE, 2 awardees of the Teaching and Research Award Program for Outstanding Young Teachers in Higher Education Institutions of MOE, 1 winner of the Guanghua Engineering Scientific Award for Young Scientists, 2 key teachers of MOE, 4 awardees of Excellent Young Teacher Program of MOE, 9 academic leaders in Sichuan province, 6 awardees of Trans-Century Training Programme Foundation for the Talents and the Fund for Distinguished Young Scholar in Sichuan Province, 23 advisors of doctoral students, 35 full professors and 39 associate professors.

The college now has National Engineering Laboratory of Eco-Friendly Polymeric Materials (Sichuan), Key Laboratory of Green Chemistry and Technology of MOE, Engineering Research Center of Environment-Friendly Polymer Materials of MOE, Key Laboratory of Green Chemistry and Technology of Sichuan Province, and Key Laboratory of Degradation and Flame-Retardant Polymer Materials of Sichuan Province. The chemistry laboratories locate in Chemistry Building , Science Building , Chemistry Building in Hua Xi campus, and the first fundamental experiment building in Jian An new campus.

Recently, the faculty members have accomplished and undertaken over 350 research projects funded by National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), Key Program and Major Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China, National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), General Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China, and other research programs through various ministries or Sichuan province. The amount of scientific research funds and the number of high-level research papers grow steadily in College of Chemistry .

The college has built good collaborative relationships with prestigious universities and research institutes home and abroad, including nearly 20 countries and regions such as the United States of America, the United Kingdom, France, German, Belgium, Japan, Israel, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
