This major emphasizes on theoretical and practical study, as well as knowledge application. The methodology of this major focuses on the combination of language surveys and heories both from home and abroad and the combination of Modern Chinese and Ancient Chinese, so that students can be equipped with sound and solid foundation of knowledge. They can keep abreast of the latest achievements and trend in this field and acquire strong teaching and study ability in languages. After graduation, students from this major are welcomed by institutes, colleges, publishing houses and other areas in teaching, researching or editing. Some graduates work on the application of languages in government offices or enterprises. Courses for postgraduates are as follows: Language Theory, Research Methodology of Languages, Selective reading of Famous Linguistic Works, Grammatical Theory, Semantics Theory, Vocabulary Theory, Study on Functional Words, Experimental Phonetics, Phonetics and phonology, History of Chinese, Chinese Phonology, Critical Interpretation of Ancient Chinese Texts, Chinese Dialects and Survey on Dialects, Chinese Characters and so on.
