Dear SICAS student, in your daily life and studies in China, a bank card is crucial. It will simplify various tasks such as paying tuition, managing expenses, and making online purchases, having a Chinese bank card will greatly simplify your experience and make life more convenient.Today, we’re offering a comprehensive guide on how to apply for and use a Chinese bank card, ensuring you’re well-prepared for a smooth and enjoyable stay while studying in China.
1.Choosing a Bank
Before applying for a bank card, the first step is selecting the right bank. Almost all banks in China offer services to international students. When choosing a bank, you can focus on the following two points:
(1) Quality of ServiceChina has six major state-owned commercial banks: Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Bank of Communications, and Postal Savings Bank of China.
In addition, there are twelve joint-stock commercial banks, including China CITIC Bank, China Everbright Bank, China Merchants Bank, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, China Minsheng Bank, Hua Xia Bank, Ping An Bank, Industrial Bank, China Guangfa Bank, China Bohai Bank, China Zheshang Bank and EverGrowing Bank Co., Limited
Beyond these, there are also numerous city commercial banks and private banks, each with unique advantages and features.
(2) LocationWhen choosing a bank, location is an important factor to consider. For international students living on campus, it's recommended to prioritize banks that have branches either on campus or close by. This will save you a lot of time and transportation costs when opening an account, depositing, withdrawing money, or seeking assistance, allowing you to enjoy more convenient banking services.
For international students living off-campus, it’s advisable to select a bank branch that is close to your residence or frequent activity areas, so that it's easy to visit when you need to handle banking tasks.
When considering location, also pay attention to the bank's operating hours. The hours may vary between branches of the same bank. Choosing a branch with hours that better align with your personal schedule can further enhance your banking experience.
*Note
the difference between bank branches and 24-hour self-service banks. Bank branches provide in-person services where staff interact directly with customers. These branches usually operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, with some offering weekend hours.
In contrast, 24-hour self-service banks offer ATMs and other automated services like deposit/withdrawal machines. You can handle transactions such as transfers, bill payments, and password changes without needing to interact with staff, and these services are available around the clock.
2.Preparation of Application Materials
When applying for a bank card, you need to prepare the following materials:
Valid Personal Identification:
A valid passport.Proof of Study: Documents such as a study visa.
Contact Information: A Chinese mobile number is required for receiving SMS verification from the bank.

(2) Go to the BankBring your passport and other relevant documents to the bank. Before proceeding, you need to take a number from the self-service machine and wait for your number to be called at the counter. If you're unsure how to use the machine, ask a bank staff member for assistance.
