Preparing to enter China

Preparing to enter China A. Your visa You can apply for the student visa (X visa) or visiting visa (F visa) through the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country. 1) X visa is a student single entry clearance. Within 30 days after arriving in China you MUST complete all the procedures of registration to ECNU and apply to the Shanghai Exit-Entry Administration Bureau for the residence permit. If you do not complete this within 30 days, you will be fined. 2) F visa is a short time visiting visa. The valid period of F visa can be 30 days to 180 days. If it doesn't cover the period of your study here, before the expiration of your visa you MUST apply to renew your visa in the Shanghai Exit-Entry Administration Bureau (SEEAB). It is very strict law in China that if you remain in China with an expired visa, the fine range is from ¥500 ( per day ) to ¥5,000 ( ten days ) by SEEAB. In light of this case, please check the expiration date of your visa or residence permit carefully. B. Employment Students' permission to enter the country will normally prohibit them from seeking employment or restrict them in such a way that a work permit cannot be issued by the authorities. No student should come to China without funding for the full course. C. Insurance In order to guarantee the safety of international students during your stay here, we require that all international students should have medical insurance. During registration period, there will be an insurance company providing insurance services for international students. You may find more information about the insurance in the Brief Introduction to Ping An Annuity Insurance Company, Ltd. Comprehensive Insurance & Protection for Foreigners staying in China. Leaving home A. What to pack There are currently nearly 3600 international students from over 80 countries in East China Normal University. It is impossible to list everything which students from every country should bring. Here are just a few suggestions:  Study articles A dictionary and basic reference books in your own language relating to your subject will be helpful. But do not bring too many books or stationary. Until the course begins it is impossible to know which books to buy and which to borrow from the library. Most required books will be available from bookstores in Shanghai and stationary is not expensive.  Electrical equipment Electrical equipment, particularly computers from home, may not be compatible with the electrical system in Shanghai. Electricity supply system here is 220V. Moreover, the plug and the socket may be incompatible so please check before departure. Multi-function power cords, transformers can solve the problem, and they are also available in Shanghai.  Clothing Winter and summer clothes are both necessary for your stay in Shanghai. Bring at least one warm sweater or cardigan and a jacket for winter. Most things in Shanghai are inexpensive and shopping is convenient, comparing the other big cities in the world. You may simply purchase what you need here. B. How much money to bring Cost of living You will need ¥35,000 a year to cover your living expenses. This would cover a very frugal and basic lifestyle in a shared household.
