College of Information Science and Technology

The predecessor of the Information Science and Technology School of Beijing Normal University is the wireless electronics subject in physics department, which formally recruited students from 1964. The wireless electronics department was established in 1980, the education technology subject was established in 1985 and the computer subject was established in 1987. The School of Information Science was founded based on the wireless electronics department, the information technology and manage science department and the computer science subject in mathematical department, which including electronics department, computer science department, information technology & manage science department and education technology science department. The information technology & manage science department was merge into the School of Management in 2001. The education technology department was developed to the School of Education Technology. From that time the School of Information Science was renamed as the College of Information Science and Technology.

Now, the College of Information Science and Technology consists of two departments and many science research centers, namely the electronics science and technology department and the computer science and technology department. The aim of the school is train the students as the experts of the information science and technology. There are two bachelor's degree subjects including the Electronics Science and the Computer Science. At the same time there are six master's degree subjects including the Communication and Information Systems, Signal and Information Processing, Computer Software and Theory, Computer Applied Technology, Computer Architecture, Pattern Recognition and Intelligent System. Right now there are 433 undergraduate students, 170 graduate students and 10 doctors which are trained together with other schools.

Nowadays in the College of Information Science and Technology, there exists a high-qualified and rationally structured teaching staff group, which includes 41 full-time professional teachers, of whom 9 are Professors, 17 are Associate Professors. Statistically, 27 teachers obtained PhDs and 19 teachers’ age range from 36 to 45.
Since 2006, the school has made historical breakthrough in the number of

state-level scientific research projects, which backed by the fact that the school has obtained 6 items of General Projects of NSFC, one Overseas Outstanding Youth Fund and one State 863 Planning Project. In addition, the school is undertaking one key Science Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology and one General Project Beijing WWF. And in the same time the project funds amount to nearly three million Yuan. Especially, the project “The Research on Restoration of Three-Dimensional Damaged Rigid and its Application in the Virtual Restoration of the Culture Relic” which was completed under the leadership of the Professor Zhou Ming-quan, the dean of the school was awarded the second prize of 2006 Annual Science and Technology Progress Award in the Ministry of Education.

The school positively conducts the domestic and international cooperation in talent training all of the time. Domestically, the school strengthens the construction of the lab and the training base constantly and cooperates with enterprises such as the Digital China Corp., Zhongguancun International Incubator(in Beijing) base of software talents and so on, so that it has initially formed the practical teaching system owned the main body connected with several other organizations. As to the international, the school has maintained good cooperative relations in talent training with many first-class universities abroad in various forms such as students exchanging and training together and so on. Until now, the school has planed to exchange undergraduates and train cooperatively with the Groept University in Belgium, the Asia University and the GuangYun University in South Korean, the Bordeaux University in France and the George Mason University in America.

The school encourages the students to actively participate in scientific research and innovation activities and various competitions. In recent years, the academy students have published more than 130 academic articles and have won over 90 internal and external awards as participating in contests such as the National Undergraduate Electronic Design contest, Mathematical Modeling and Computer Application Competition, English Contests and the Students Entrepreneurship Contest and also various other activities.
