The School of Optoelectronic Engineering of Chongqing University is a famous base in the world, which is engaged in important scientific-research and training talent persons in the fields of Optoelectronic Information Engineering, Electronic Science & Technology, Precise Instruments & Machinery, Measuring and Testing Technology & Instrument, Optical Engineering, Pattern Recognition & Intelligent System, etc.

This school is composed of Department of Measuring and Testing Technology & Instruments, Department of Information Engineering, Department of Electronic Science & Technology.

At present, the school has subjects containing 2 first-degree subjects (Precise Instruments & Machinery, Optical Engineering), 2 mobile postdoctoral stations (Instrument Science & Technology, Optical Engineering), 5 doctoral degrees (Precise Instruments & Machinery, Measuring and Control Technology & Instruments, Optoelectronic Information Engineering, Information Capture & Processing, Optoelectronics & Machinery Integration), 5 Master’s degrees (Precise Instruments & Machinery, Measuring and Testing Technology & Instruments, Optical Engineering, Pattern Recognition & Intelligent System, Microelectronics & Solid-state Electronics), 3 undergraduate specialities (Measuring and Control Technology & Instruments, Information Engineering in the field of optoelectronic information, Electronic Science & Technology), including 1 the state key subject (Precise Instruments & Machinery). Optoelectronic Technology & System is a key subject constructed in National “211” Project.

The school has over 120 teacher faculty and staff at present, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 14 full professors (with 10 doctoral tutors), 22 associate professors and associate researchers. Now there are over 800 undergraduates, over 200 graduate candidates for master’s degree and doctoral degree.

The School of Optoelectronic Engineering of Chongqing University was founded in 1979. The Institute of Optoelectronics and Fine Mechanics was set up under the grant of National Education Commission, with the advantages of intersecting subjects, gathered many talent persons in the fields of machinery, electronics, optics and computer science, and begun enrolling graduate students since 1979 and undergraduate students in the speciality of Precise Instruments & Machinery since 1982.

In 1985, Department of Optoelectronic Precise Instruments was set up, with the establishment of the Opening Lab for Optoelectronic Technology & system of the National Education Commission in 1992, which was assessed and renamed as the Key Lab for Optoelectronic Technology & system of the Ministry of Education in 2000, and became the key subject of National “211” Project in 1997. The subjects of Instrument Science & Technology and Optical Engineering were assessed as first-degree subjects for doctoral degrees by the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council in 1998 and 2000, respectively. In 2001, the subject of Precise Instrument & Machinery won the national assessment of the state key subjects in the whole country.

The school has lot of advanced and sophisticated instruments and equipments purchased employing the loans of the World Bank. The subject of Optoelectronic Technology & System, as key subject of National “211” Project, was supported by an investment of nearly 10 millions RMB to increase the basic facilities in the duration of the 9th five-year-plan. As key subject in the 2nd section of National “211” Project, it would obtain another investment of nearly 20 millions RMB to enhance the construction of subject base, installations and facilities in the duration of the 10th five-year-plan.

In recent years, the school has undertaken programs of several tens, including National Tackling-key-problem Projects, “863” Progammes, “973” Progammes, Projects of Key program and Free Applications of NSFC’s programs, and other programs, with the scientific research funds of nearly 10 millions RMB every year. The main achievements of scientific research consist of QGK405 High Accuracy Radial Grating Generating Machine with Optoelectronic Control, Grazing Incidence Grating Spectrometer, Laser Particle Sizer, From Reader AV-100, Industrial Computed Tomography (ICT), Self-scanning Photodiode Array Image Sensor, etc., of which some were awarded the titles of the State S&T Awards, including 2 the 2nd-Rank Awards, 3 the 3rd-Rank Awards, and over 30 provincial- and ministerial-degree awards. The industrialization of achievements of high & new technologies has been finished with the social and economic benefit of several hundred millions. There’s hope of social and economic benefit created tremendously by the School of Optoelectronic Engineering of Chongqing University, due to new achievements of S&T research in the fields of optoelectronic information industries.
