Inauguration Ceremony of the Research Institute for Indian Ocean Economies and the First International Conference on Rising Asia: Development of China and Indian Ocean Economies

On the morning of 20th November, the Inauguration Ceremony of the Research Institute for Indian Ocean Economies (RIIO) and the First International Conference on Rising Asia: Development of China and Indian Ocean Economies held in Yunnan World Expo Garden Hotel. The ceremony was presided by President Xiong Shuxin. President Xiong unveiled the plaque to establish RIIO together with Wang Rong, university secretary of the CPC, Zhou Gang, former Chinese ambassador to India, Wan Guanghua, Chief Economist of Asian Development Bank and Reng Jia, head of Yunnan Academy of Social Science.    
 
Secretary Wang addressed in the ceremony and expressed warm welcome to all the guests present. He analyzed the importance of the common development of China and Indian Ocean economies and briefly explained the goals and guideline of RIIO. He said: “China is a Pacific country. But it is a Pacific country which has close relation with Indian Ocean. It is not only because of the main channel of trade and resource transportation and the increasing investment of China in Indian Ocean region, but also because of the common historic missions and developing goals. And from the view of history and future development, the position of Yunnan will be more and more prominent as a province which is able to promote the relation between China and Indian Ocean economies. To pay attention and study Indian Ocean economies and promote the exchange and development of China and Indian Ocean economies is the responsibility of the universities, institutes and scholars in Yunnan. Therefore, we establish RIIO in YUFE.”
After the ceremony, former ambassador Zhou Gang, prof. Wan and prof. Srikanth Kondapalli, professor from Research Center of Eastern Asia Studies of International Relation School of Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Liu Zhijie:Chief Officer of Chinese Consulate to Calcutta, India made keynote speech on the strategic importance and developing prospect of RIIO. Afterwards, the participants discussed the four topics: Strategy and Perspective: Development of China and India Ocean Economies, The Construction of the Cooperative Mechanism of China and India Ocean Economies, Sino-Indian Relation and Economic and Trading Perspective, The Issues of System, Population, Education and Security of Sino-Indian Development in the conference. This international conference was held successfully and achieved the desired results.
