School of Mathematical Sciences

Initially knows as Department of Mathematics of National Southwest Associated University, School of Mathematical Sciences was founded in the year 1938, with Mr. Yang Wuzhi as its first dean and with many prestigious mathematicians (Chen Xingshen, Hua Luogeng, Jiang Zehan) as its former teachers. In more than 60 years, School of Mathematical Sciences has been carrying forward the good traditions and rigorous scholarship of National Southwest Associated University and insisting on its guidelines of running the university: to train highly qualified teachers for fundamental education in Yunnan Province. School of Mathematical Sciences has educated a student population of more than ten thousands and is honorably called “the Cradle of Teachers of Mathematics on Red Earth Plateau”.

School of Mathematical Sciences consists of three departments and one research institute: Department of Mathematics, Department of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, Department of Mathematical Finance, and Institute of Mathematical Sciences. School of Mathematical Sciences boasts a qualified faculty of 82 (69 of whom are full-time teachers), which undertakes the teaching of mathematics to more than 900 undergraduates and 80 postgraduates. Since 1989, School of Mathematical Sciences has made many achievements. It has been rewarded for three times of “National Excellent Teaching Achievement Award”, for five times of “Provincial Excellent Teaching Achievement Award”, and for three times of “Zeng Xianzi Educational Fund Award”. It has taken on two significant educational reform projects in Yunnan Province (one of the first batch of Provincial Key Specialty Development projects; Trial Project of Modern Teacher Education Reform). Three Provincial Key Specialty Development projects have been completed (Computer Science Theories (the 7th Five-Year Plan); Applied Functional Analysis (the 9th Five-Year Plan); Mathematical Finance (the 10th Five-Year Plan)). More than 60 high-level government supported projects have been conducted (12 of which are supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China). More than 100 papers and theses have been published in international core journals (40 of which are included and retrieved in SCI), and 11 monographs and 26 textbooks/reference books have been published. School of Mathematical Sciences has won eight Provincial Scientific Technology Awards and two Provincial University Technology Achievement Awards. In Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, School of Mathematical Sciences always ranks among the top six in nation-wide Normal University group, and always ranks first among universities in Yunnan Province. The employment rate of graduates ranks among top three in recent years in Yunnan Normal University.

“Mathematics and Applied Mathematics” is one of the first batch of Provincial Key Specialty Development specialties, and is the Trial Modern Teacher Education Reform as well under the guideline of The Reform of Training Higher Education Qualified Personnel (the 11th Five-Year Plan).
