The predecessor of School of Literature, Journalism & Communication of Yunnan Normal University is the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Teachers College of NationalSouthwest Associated University which was co-founded by Pekin University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University in 1938. Well-known scholars like Zhu Ziqing, Luo Changpei, Wen Yiduo, Yang Zhensheng and Luo Yong were deans of the department successively, and famous academicians like Tang Lan, Liu Wendian, Wang Li, Pu Jiangqing, You Guo-en, Chen Jiameng, Shen congwen, Yu Guanying and Chang QingChang once taught here.

In the year of 1946, after Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Nankai University’s return to their original sites in North China, TeachersCollege of National Southwest Associated University stayed in Kunming and developed to be an independent college, known as NationalKunming Teachers College. In the meanwhile, Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Teachers College of NationalSouthwest Associated University was named Department of Chinese Language and Literature of NationalKunming Teachers College.In April 1984, it was renamed as Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Yunnan Normal University. In order to meet the requirements of the social, economic and cultural development and the higher education's reform, School of Literature, Journalism & Communication was established on the basis of Department of Chinese Language and Literature in 2000.

The School has 10 second-grade master's degree disciplines, including Chinese linguistic and Philology, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Literature and Art Studies, Aesthetics, Chinese Minority Languages and Literature, Curriculum and Teaching Methodology, Radio and television Art and Journalism. Moreover, it also recruits master of education in Chinese language teaching.

At present, the School has 1 provincial level key discipline, and 4 colonel-level key disciplines. The provincial level key discipline is Chinese linguistic and Philology. The colonel-level key disciplines are Local Culture, Chinese Curriculum and Teaching Theory, Comparative Literature & World Literature and Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature.
