School of Economics& Management


Founded in June 2007, the School of Economics attached to Yunnan Normal University, whose predecessor is the combination of the School of Financing & Banking and the Department of Economic Management of the School of Economics & Politics, now is a brand-new teaching entity characterized by multi-majors, multi-disciplines and various levels.

The School focuses on the training of talented graduates with comprehensive makings, and attaches great importance to scientific researches, contributing to higher education in Southwest border areas and Yunnan Province so as to be China-and- Southeast- Asia-oriented. Besides, the School is committed to constantly strengthen itself to become regionally distinguished and embark on the way of harmonious development. The major objective is to be listed in one of the leading and influential counterparts at home and to be the prestigious institute of higher learning featuring teaching and research. The School also strives to be one of the vital bases in West China to turn out high-track talents engaged in economic management.    

Currently the School has set up four departments—Economics, Financing, Business Administration and Taxation and 12 research branches including a Research Center of Regional Economic Development, a Research Center of Human Resources Development & Evaluation, a Enterprises Research Center, a Research Institute of Regional Financing & Economic Development, a Research Institute of Financial Taxation, a Marketing Research Institute. In addition, it has established MBA Education Center. Besides, there are two establishments—Experiment-based Teaching Center and Training Center for Executives from Financial Organizations.   

The number of the faculty is 63, of whom 11 are professors, 18 associate professors, 16  with doctorate degrees( those in-service included),29 with master’s degrees, 20 post-graduate mentors, 1 provincial outstanding expert, 2 provincially leading backup talents in academic researches, 1 leading talent in teaching and research in Yunnan-based universities, 1 provincially prominent expert in social science, 3 professors entitled with Yunan-Normal-University-based posts, 4 leading academic experts and 8 competent teachers at Yunan-Normal-University-based level. Thus the School boasts its academic stratum with qualified makings , great potentials and enormous vitality. The whole team is well-organized and full-fledged with gradually improved young academic  backbones.

At present the number of students is 1374, of whom 34 are post-graduates and 1340 are undergraduates. Strictly following the principal objectives of all-round talents training – substantial major study and diversified career preparation to make competent and qualified graduates, the School is sparing no efforts to optimize its major setup, deepen teaching reform so as to turn out specialized candidates with profound theories, proficient major, innovative spirit and amazing aptitude for exploring and practicing.

The School has always gave top priority to disciplinary improvement and development with efficient and effective measures. The past years have witnessed the gratifying and substantial expansion in this field with 3 majors established to confer master’s degree including political economics, regional economics, financing(insurance included) and 7 majors to confer bachelor’s degree including economics, financing, fiscal science, international economics and trade, accounting, financial management and marketing. Of all the disciplines, financing is listed as the Yunnan-Normal-University-based key major. The courses in fiscal science, management science and political economics are catalogued as excellent-courses at university level.

The recent years have seen the chairing and completion of our faculties in various research topics amounting to 65, of which 32 are at or above the provincial and ministry level with 6 listed as Funded Projects of National Social Sciences, 1 as National Soft Science Project, 1 as Major Humanities Funded Project of Ministry of Education, 3 Inter-university Cooperative Projects, 2 as Provincial Natural Science Funded Projects, and 16 Provincial Social Science Projects. By the end of June 2007 over RMB 4 million has been allocated as expenditure for scientific research in our school. In recent years, altogether 50 monographs as well as over 400 papers are published, of which over 200 are in the Chinese core journals including Macro-economic Study, Theory & Practice in System Engineering, Global Economics & Politics, Economic Tendency, Global Financing Study, Numeral Economics & Professional Economic Study and Economic Geography. In recent years 16 research results are awarded prizes above provincial and ministry level.      

The School is equipped with outstanding modern facilities for teaching and scientific research such as library, reading room, computer labs, financing lab, accounting lab, marketing lab, fiscal management lab, lab of simulated data in economic management. The in-collection books in Chinese and foreign languages have accumulated to 100,000, of which books in English are 7,000 and over 160 journals are available both in Chinese and English version. The School has attached great importance to academic exchange, consequently, such exchanges have been established with over 20 universities and scientific research institutions in U.S., Australia, Japan and Thailand.   

The newly-established School, at its critical stage to seek new breakthroughs and new perspectives on further development from reforms, is confronted with both opportunities and challenges. The whole faculties will be highly motivated enough to coordinate all efforts and keep abreast with times so as to achieve snowball leap in terms of equal expansion in scale, quality, setup and efficiency. As a result we are fully prepared to turn our school into being wide-open, special characteristic and academically competent further contributing to regional economic and social development.
