Postgraduate programs
The School of Science offers three postgraduate programs: optics, condensed matter physics, and applied mathematics.
Main course:

1.The Postgraduate Program in Optics

(1) Degree Courses: Advanced Optics, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Laser Physics, and Nonlinear Optics.
(2) Non-Degree Courses: Photoelectric Detecting Technology, Modern Optics Experiment, Principle and Application of Light Scattering, Photo-acoustic and Photo-thermal Technique and Application, Introduction to Fourier Optics, Fibre Optics, Nanometer Heat Transfer Study, Thin Film Optics, Nanometer Electronics, and Computing Physics.

2. The Postgraduate Program in Condensed Matter Physics
(1) Degree Courses: Group Theory, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, and Solid State Theory.
(2) Non-Degree Courses: Condensed Matter Physics, Thin Film Physics, Modern Physics Experiment, Computational Physics, Quantum Statistical Physics, Nano Electronics, Ferroelectric Physics, Magnetic Physics, and Semiconductor Physics.

3. The Postgraduate Program in Applied Mathematics
(1) Degree Courses: Basic Algebra, Functional Analysis, and Matrix Analysis.
(2) Non-Degree Courses: Partial Differential Equations, Special Topics on Differential Equations, Stability Theory of Differential Equations and Applications, Stability Theory of Discrete Systems, Theory of Hamiltonian Systems, Functional Differential Equations, Critical Point Theory and Applications, Qualitative Theory of Ordinary Differential Equations, and Theory of Dynamic Systems.


Undergraduate programs

1. Department of Physics
The department of Physics is one of the departments in the School of Science, with a teaching staff of 50, and more than 75% of them hold doctoral or master degrees. There are 5 professors, 14 associate processors, 15 technical personnel for experiments, 5 M.S. supervisors, 3 special-position teachers of Jinan University, excellent Teachers of Shandong, and excellent Youth Teaching Experts of Jinan University. 

The Department of Physics takes charge of physics education and research for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It offers two majors in its undergraduate program: physics, and optical information science and technology. It has a M.S. program in optics and condensed matter physics. The aim is to foster qualified physical personnel who possess both solid theoretical basis and high experimental ability. The students are expected to apply creatively knowledge, technique and research methods of modern physics to different technological and social fields. The department includes some teaching and research rooms for fundamental physics, theoretical physics, photoelectron, and a Physics Experiment Center. The center consists of Laboratory for College Physics, Laboratory for Physics Major, and Laboratory for Optical Information Science and Technology Major. It is also the provincial exemplary center of fundamental physics experiment, possessing a number of advanced instruments and equipments.

At present, the Department of Physics included the following research fields: theoretical physics, photoelectric detection, magnetic material, calculation condensed matter physics, nano-matter, laser physics, nonlinear optics, etc. It has two research institutes, i.e. Institute of Photoelectric Technology and Institutes of Particle Sizing. The department has achieved great progress in three research fields (modern photoelectric detection technology, interaction of light and substance, and nano-material), on the basis of the institutes of photoelectric technology and particle sizing. It has undertaken several programs of National Natural Scientific Foundation, National Key Technologies R&D Program of 75, Shandong Key Technologies R&D Program of 95, PC Key Technologies R&D Program of 95�, and Shandong Key Technologies R&D Program of 95. Many of them have achieved  Scientific and Technological Progress Award� and Shandong Province Scientific and Technological Progress Award�. At present, several programs funded by National Natural Scientific Foundation and Natural Scientific Foundation of Shandong Province are in progress.

The department establishes an extensively cooperative and communicative relationship within the field both at home and abroad. Recently, some teachers have been abroad to visit universities and institutes, participating in various academic meetings. At the same time, the department invites distinguished scholars around the world to visit our school and co-research with us.

The Major of Physics
The major of physics aims to cultivate students to master fundamental theories, elementary knowledge, basic methods and experimental techniques of physics and mathematics. The students are required to know clearly frontier theories, applied perspectives, developing trends and new achievements within the field. They obtain initial training for conducting scientific research, and they are expected to be qualified teachers, researchers and other educational workers in physics and related fields. The major offers four years courses, and confers the Bachelor Degree of Physics. It has three major specialties: (1) Physics Education, (2) Photoelectron Material, and (3) Electronic Engineering.

The major courses are offered as follows: higher mathematics, mechanics, thermo tics, electromagnetics, optics, atomic physics, electronic circuit, theoretical mechanics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics and statistical physics, mathematical physics, general physics test, solid-state physics, modern physics test, etc.

The Major of Optical Information Science and Technology
The major of optical information science and technology aims to cultivate students to master fundamental theories, elementary knowledge and experimental techniques of optics and laser. The students are expected to be qualified technical personnel to research, teach, or design products within the fields of applied optics, photoelectronics, electronic information science and computer science, esp. integration of optical and electrical machinery industries. The major offers four years courses, and confers the Bachelor Degree of Physics. It has three major specialities: (1) holophotal communication, (2) optical information processing, and (3) photoelectronic detection.
The major courses are offered as follows: electrodynamics, mathematical physics, quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, laser principle and application, contemporary information optics, optical engineering, optical fiber communication, transducer principle and application, software technique foundation, speciality experiment, etc.


2. Science of Mathematics
The science of mathematics of Jinan University comprises of two undergraduate majors ncluding information and computational science, mathematics and applied mathematics, and one master degrees program---applied mathematics. At present it is further subdivided in 2 disciplines of regular courses, mathematic department and college mathematic department. There are 79 teachers, 10 persons are professors and 28 are associate professorsmong them majo rity of young teachers have the master degrees and 8 have PhD. With the goal of performing first-class teaching and research, over the past five years, it has made considerable progress towards raising its standards of teaching, research and disciplinary organization. At present, it has shifted its focus, giving priority to basic scientific research and taking basic theoretical research of information, statistical techniques and the relevant cross disciplines as a new growth point, which includes differential equation and its applications, mathematics approach in indeterminate theory, intelligent computation and optimal control, graph theory and combinatorial mathematics, cryptography and information safety and so on. The design of the educational programs is aimed at igh quality, advanced learning, multi-disciplinary and innovative� to enhance students' grasp of fundamental science and mathematical ability, to widen students' interests in cross disciplines, as well as to cultivate the students' adaptability in technological innovation to meet the challenge of Chinese developing economy. Up to now thousands of undergraduate students have graduated from the university.

The major of mathematics and applied mathematics:
The goal of the major is to cultivate students excellent mathematic qualities, and to train applied specialist mathematics research and education. After they graduate, they can engage teaching in college and middle school and researching, and mathematic research and education, statistical analysis, scientific computation in high technology enterprise as well as.
Its main major course includes real function theory, abstract algebra, topology, probability theory, differential equation, mathematical model, differential geometry and so on.

The major of information science and computational mathematics:
The goal of the major is to cultivate students� excellent mathematic qualities, to make students master basic theory and approach of information science and scientific computation, and to offer basic training. After they graduate, they are able to solve practical problems with their learned knowledge and trained skills, to do research, teaching, application development and management as the high-grade professionals.
Its main major course includes differential equation, probability statistics, discrete mathematics, numerical analysis, mathematical model, C linguistic program design, data structure, data base theory and its application and so on.
