The School of Material Science and Engineering

About the School

  The School of Material Science and Engineering is one of the oldest schools in University of Jinan. There are three undergraduate programs in this school, i.e. Material Science and Engineering, Composite Materials and Material Physics. It has first-class master degree-granting programs for material science and engineering and for material science, and recruits doctor graduate students with related college. There are Department of Material Science, Department of Material Engineering and a Centre of Material Experiment, which include Staff Room of Material Technology, Staff Room of Material Engineering, Staff Room of Material chemistry and physics and Staff Room of Composite Material. There are eight research institutions, which are Graduate School of New Material, Graduate School of Structural Material, and Graduate School of Walling Material etc. The discipline of Material Science is one of the enhanced construction academics of Shandong province. The Shandong cement engineering technique research center, the grain academic association in Shandong and Shandong composite material academic association all rely on the discipline.

  There are 23 professors, 20 associate professors and 6 senior laboratory assistants. 66% of the faculty own senior professional qualification. There are 24 doctors and 18 masters among the young teachers, which occupy 95% of the young teachers. It owns Shandong province leaders in their chosen field of learning, doctorate student supervisors, experts enjoying State Department subsidy, middle-aged and young experts. It also invites about 20 famous scholars as the visiting professor. Thus, a teaching and researching group is formed mainly by middle-aged and young teachers. 

  The school has a Material Experiment centre with an area of 6200 m2, which consists of the building of Material Synthesis Experiment, the experiment building of composite material and a material test plant. The main equipments embrace JEM-2010 Transmission electron microscope, Hitachi S-2500 Scanning electron microscope with EDAX spectrum and wave spectrum, Agilent-4294A resistance determinator, VEECO-NsIV atom power microscope, Premier station ferro-electricity test macro, Quantachrome Poremaster-60 mercury porosimeter, Beckman coulter LS-13320 laser diffraction particle size analyzer, Bruker D8-advance X-ray diffractometer(XRD), NETZSCH STA490-EP differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), advanced test equipments and advanced equipments for preparation and processing of the materials. At the same time, there are reading rooms with professional resources, teaching computer rooms, and net centers which create a good environment for teaching and researching.

   The school puts teaching and research in center, taking a deeply reform in education, and the teaching quality rises continuously. The undertaken study of material professional course system gets second provincial award of excellent teaching result, and the major of material science and engineering is one of excellent majors of Shandong province. Currently, the school has cultivated more than 4,000 undergraduate students, who are high in political and professional quality and innovative spirit after graduation, and many of them have become the academic leaders, technological backbones and managers in some universities, colleges, research institutions. 

   The school is actively carrying on science research and has formed steady research directions in advantage building material, electronic material, metal and metal-based composite material, ceramics-based composite material, the technique of powder production and characterization. In recent years, the school has undertaken several scientific research projects including the national the national tackle key problem plan of science and technology, national fund for natural science and province (department) grade projects. Among these projects, more than 20 items reach international advance level, more than 30 items force into the leading and pioneer place, more than 30 items gain the encouragement from the province or the department, and more than 20 items obtain the national invention patent. More than 10 teaching material and composition are published. And about 1000 thesis are published in the academic publication. At the same time, the school carries through many technique design and technological reformation when a lot of technological fruits are transformed into productivity with enormous benefit in economy, society and environment. The school devotes much to the progress of the national material production. 

    The School of Material Science and Engineering provides a favorable environment and development space for the students. The faculty with enterprising and innovation will make concerted effort to train creative talents with high quality. 


Academics and Research

Research fields

The discipline of material science is one of the most important disciplines of Shandong province and one of the strengthening constructions of University of Jinan, which consists of the following four research fields:

Advanced building materials 

This field is featured by high-performance cement, cement-base material and walling material of new pattern. Sulphur-aluminate contained barium cement system and phosphorus-aluminate cement system are developed, which are high-performance and have autonomous information property right. It will do more researches in the aspects of green production of building materials, high-performance cement and concrete, cement-base function and aptitude material and parts of an apparatus based on new pattern cement, aptitude simulation and optimization of cement materials based on three-dimensional image reconstruction, the research on cement and concrete of lasting properties, high-performance concrete remedy materials and technology. The field is led by Professor Cheng Xin.

Electric materials 

This field is mainly engaged in the preparation and performance of ferro-electricity pellicle, such as high tropism SBT, and it is featured by crystallography tropism control, microcosmic electrical token, low-heat budget technology and etc. The research focuses will be shifted from ferro-electricity and piezo-electricity materials to the application of such electric materials as semiconductor storage materials, non-plumbum pie-electricity thick film materials, broad band semiconductor materials, electrode materials ect., into memorizer, microcosmic electromechanical system and photoelectrical detector. The field is led by Professor Hu Gongda.

Metal and metal-base composite 

This field mainly studies colored alloys and ferroalloys, and it focuses on the research of fusion techniques of Mg-, Al-, Zn- and Fe- alloy, basic theory and application of fusion structure and property, preparation and performance of metal-base composite, and technical development of metal and its composite in new materials. The field is led by Professor Geng Haoran.

Microcosmic nanometer powder and high-performance ceramics materials 
This field focuses on the preparation, taken and application of unorganic nanometer powder. Nanometer powder preparation technology is studied by the method of chemistry and physics. The resaerch on thermodynamics and kinetic is stressed in the aspects of process basic theory. It has developed in such fields as unorganic nanometer antiwear additive, white light LED-use rare-earth fluorescent powder, nanoeter technique preparing ZTA new pattern diphase ceramics, laser crystal used YAG/Y2O3 transparent ceramics, and Ti/Al2O3 gradient function materials
