SDU Awards Honorary Professor to Distinguished Academics Prof. Goran K Hansson and Prof. Peter Libby


 

 

The Conferring Ceremony for Honorary Professorship of SDU was held in the Lecture Hall of the Complex Building, Baotuquan Campus, Shandong University on March 17th.  Goran K Hansson, a Distinguished Professor at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, Secretary General of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine, and Peter Libby, a Professor of Medicine at Harvard University Medical School, Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, the U.S., were awarded Honorary Professorships by SDU President Zhang Rong.
Prof. Zhang Yun, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Director of the Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Remodeling and Function Research of SDU, presided over the ceremony. Vice President of SDU Chen Zijiang attended the related activities.

Zhang said that Professor Hansson and Professor Libby were distinguished academics in the field of Atherosclerosis studies and had made outstanding achievements in the atherosclerosis field and related disciplines.

Zhang stated that SDU has a strong scientific research in cardiovascular field and the Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Remodeling and Function Research is an important base of SDU’s medical research. He expressed his hope that Professor Hansson and Professor Libby would share the frontier of research achievements with everyone to actively engage in the cooperation and exchange between SDU and world-renowned scientific research institutions.

Professor Hansson reminisced about the cooperation process in aspects of scientific research and student cultivation with SDU and took this opportunity to further the cooperation and exchange with SDU and to express his desire for mutual development.
Professor Libby felt honored to be an Honorary Professor of SDU and was willing to set up a bridge of cooperation between SDU and world-renowned scientific research institutions, actively contributing to the development of cardiovascular discipline at SDU.

The International Workshop on Current Progress in Atherosclerosis was held following the conferring ceremony. Attendees of the Workshop such as Professor Goran K Hansson, Professor Peter Libby and specialists and scholars from Lund University of Sweden, Texas State University of the U.S., Karolinska Institute of Sweden, as well as teacher and student representatives from SDU’s School of Medicine and the Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Remodeling and Function Research, had a discussion on the related issues.

Dr. Goran K Hansson is Distinguished Professor at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he holds the Chair of Cardiovascular Research in the Department of Medicine at Karolinska University Hospital and works at its Center for Molecular Medicine. He is the Secretary General of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine, Director of the Medical Nobel Institute, and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nobel Foundation. He also is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Academia Europaea, and chairs the Science Committee of the Louis-Jeantet Foundation in Geneva.

Dr. Hansson´s research deals with immune and inflammatory mechanisms in atherosclerosis, who received several awards, including the Anitschkow Prize from the European Atherosclerosis Society, the George Lyman Duff and Distinguished Service Awards of the American Heart Association, the Outstanding Achievement Award of the International Atherosclerosis Society, and the William Harvey Medal of the European Society of Cardiology.

Dr. Peter Libby is the Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, the U.S.. He also serves as the Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine at Harvard University Medical School.

His current major research focus is the role of inflammation in vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. Dr. Libby has received numerous awards and recognitions for his research accomplishments, including the Gold Medal of the European Society of Cardiology (2011), the Basic Research Prize of the American Heart Association (2011), and the Anitschkow Prize in Atherosclerosis Research of the European Atherosclerosis Society (2013). His areas of clinical expertise include general and preventive cardiology.
