Course outline

The course is designed to produce high quality graduates who show independent thought, flexibility and maturity and who command a sound technical knowledge of the broad aspects of Computer Science.

You will gain an appreciation of current computing practice so that the skills you learn can be applied immediately after graduation. The course also provides an understanding of the nature of Computer Science as an academic discipline.

You will graduate with a sound knowledge of the fundamentals of Computer Science, including an appreciation of the interaction between hardware and software; an understanding of human computer interaction and the sociological impact of information technology; and knowledge of the professional standards and ethics of the computer industry, together with the skills and confidence to react to its ever-increasing rate of change.

Course structure

Year One  (Preliminary Year - Ningbo)

This year of the course is undertaken at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. The first year consists in a specially designed intensive Academic English Programme designed, written and staffed by the highly experienced Centre of English Language Learning (CELE) at the University of Nottingham. This programme is carefully integrated with an academic programme designed to prepare students fully for years 1-3 of the degree programme. For further information click here.

Year Two  (Qualifying Year - Ningbo)

This year of the course is undertaken at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. You will be introduced to the key concepts and tools underpinning Modern Computer Science. You will learn how to program in Java, study the architecture and applications of computer systems and meet the areas of Mathematics you will need later in the course. You will also select one module each semester from a list of options in International Business.

Year Three (Part I - UK/Ningbo)

This year of the course "2+2" is undertaken at the University of Nottingham UK.  "4+0" is undertaken at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.

In this year you will consolidate what you have learnt so far by taking part in a software engineering group project. At the same time, you will study programming and the underlying theory of computation in greater depth and meet new topics, such as networks and the design of large scale systems. You will select one module each semester from a wide range of options. Among those currently available are modules on digital documents, computer graphics, C++ programming and user interface design.

Year Four (Part II - UK/Ningbo)

This year of the course "2+2" is undertaken at the University of Nottingham UK. "4+0" is undertaken at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.

In your final year you will select the majority of your modules from an extensive list of options. The main compulsory element is the individual project. Project topics are agreed in discussion with a supervisor.
