As a result, the name of a university does not always indicate the full range of subjects it offers. A university with a specialised name may offer programmes well beyond its original academic focus, while comprehensive universities can cover a wide range of disciplines, from engineering and business to medicine, humanities, and social sciences.
At the same time, China continues to have many specialised universities with strong academic identities in fields such as medicine, engineering, petroleum, finance, foreign languages, and aviation.
China's university system has also been shaped by major development initiatives, including Project 211, Project 985, and the current Double First-Class Initiative, which have supported the development of leading universities and disciplines.
For international students, it is therefore better to look beyond a university's name or category and check the specific programme, subject strength, admission requirements, teaching language, and degree level before making a decision.
