College of Life Science and Technology

The history of life science and technology at Tongji University can be traced back to 1907 when Tongji German Medical School was established. The Medical School of Tongji University was moved out of the University during the nationwide restructuring of institutions of higher learning in the 1950s.

In 1970s Tongji University resumed its teaching and research in life science and technology. With the emergence of a series of research and teaching organizations in 1980s, the research orientation of life science and technology was established in nearly twenty Master degree and doctoral programs as well as postdoctoral mobile stations in the disciplines of science and engineering. With adjustment of the University resources, the year 1996 witnessed the foundation of the College of Life Science and Medical Engineering. The number of part-time and full-time staff totals eighty, including eighteen full professors, twenty-one associate professors and sixteen PhD student supervisors.

On April 1, 2002, the College was renamed College of Life Science and Technology. Approved by the State Ministry of Education and the State Planning and Development Commission, the College became one of the first national talent training bases of for life science and technology in July 2002. The College consists of The Department of Biotechnology and The Department of Biomedical Engineering, Research Institute of Biotechnology, Research institute of Biomedical Engineering, Research Institute of Ergonomic Engineering, Research Institute of Trace Elements, Research Institute of Biological Resources Application Technology and Research Institute of Protein. Furthermore, it has set up joint research organizations with its international counterparts such as the Research Centre of Biomaterials, Research Centre of Biological Information and Research Centre of Marine Biotechnology. The College also has an Analytical Research Centre of Life Science, Physiological Engineering Laboratory and other specialized laboratories.

The College has made explorations to develop cross-disciplinary talents ill sciences, engineering and medicine. It has set up a Bachelor degree program in Biotechnology with Shanghai Transgenosis Research Centre. A system of using two supervisors in both medicine and engineering has been adopted for the education of Master degree and doctoral students ill surgery, stomatology and kinematic medicine. It has also carried out extensive academic exchanges with universities and enterprises in Germany, Japan, U.K., and U.S.A. in offering joint postgraduate programs and conducting research cooperation.
