College of Material Science and Engineering

The College of Material Science and Engineering was established in 1996 on a merger of The Department of Building Materials established in 1956 and The Department of Material Science and Technology established in July, 1958. In February, 1987, the Department of Material Science and Technology was renamed as the Department of Material Science and Engineering.

The College is rich in expertise and recourses. It has one academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, seventeen professors, thirty-nine associate professors and senior engineers, among whom there are ten PhD student supervisors. The College has invited a number of well-known scholars both at home and from such countries as Germany, Japan, Sweden and USA to be guest professors, honorary professors or advisory professors. There are one Bachelor's program, three Master’s programs and one PhD program. The Material Science and Technology program was among first group programs that were listed as state key programs. As the first program that was authorized to award a PhD degree, it awarded the first PhD degree of Engineering in China to a student who did a PhD program in inorganic and nonmetal materials.

A considerable number of sophisticated experimental and research facilities have been introduced to the College. There is a state key laboratory of reinforced concrete material research, a laboratory of binder materials building structure and functional material laboratory, Polymer material laboratory and glass and ceramics laboratory. Among them the state key laboratory of reinforced concrete material research was established on a loan from the World Bank in 1990. It is one of the state key laboratories under the direct leadership of the State Ministry of Education and the State Committee of Sciences. It is also the only state level laboratory of reinforced concrete, which conducts the frontier research with the most sophisticated facilities.
