School Of The History And Culture


The College of History and Culture, Henan University, was formerly known as History Department of Zhongzhou University, which was founded in 1923. Well-known scholars such as Fan Wenlan, Ji Wenfu, Meng Wentong, Guo Shaoyu, MaFeibai, Sun Haibo, Sun Zuoyun, Hu Siyong, had been teachers here in different periods. And famous historians and archaeologists Yin Da, Shi Zhangru, Bai Shouyi, Han Rulin had pursued their studies here. Ever since, an academic tradition of a blend of Chinese and Western culture, and of an integration of knowledge from the ancient and modern times has been gradually established here.  .

In 1996 the original history department was officially upgraded as the College of History and Culture. At present there are 91 faculty members. Among the faculties, there are 9 doctoral supervisors, 26 professors, 37 associate professors, 43 teachers with doctorate degrees, 2 distinguished professors in Henan Province, 4 distinguished professors in Henan University, 1scholar on the Yellow River Scholar Program, 4 excellent experts of Henan Province, 6 leading trans-century scholars of Henan Province, 2 national outstanding teachers,10 key young teachers of Henan Province, 2 winners of the Tsang Hin-chi Education Funds, and 3 experts enjoying special allowance from the State Council of China.

At present, there are 3 departments in the College of History and Culture, namely, Department of History, Department of Museology and Archaeology, and Department of Tourism Management. The history discipline is a first-level discipline which has an authority to confer the doctor’s degree; the tourism management discipline has the authority to confer the master’s degree; and there is a post-doctoral research station of history. The history discipline, a first-level discipline, is also financially aided by Henan Provincial Government, and it is one of the pillar disciplines of the Research Institute of Yellow River Civilization and Sustainable Development, a Key Research Base of Humanities of the Ministry of Education. The college’s major research institutions include the Center for Research on Ancient Chinese History, a key research base of humanities of the Institutions of higher education in Henan; the institute of History Studies of Song Dynasty and the institute of World History studies of the key open research center for humanities of Henan Institutions of higher education. And there are also 3 key research institutes of Henan University: the Institute of Modern China Studies, the Institute of World History, and the Institute of Jewish Studies. In 2009, a specialty laboratory—the laboratory of Classic Literature and Digitalized Cultural Relics was approved to be built under the cooperation the central and local governments.

Since the foundation of the original History Department, it has turned out more than 8,000 undergraduates and about 1,100 students with master’s or doctoral degree. Now there are over 200 full-time MA and Ph.D candidates, more than 1,100 full-time undergraduates.

Yan Zhaoxiang, is a distinguished professor in Henan Province, a doctoral supervisor, and also an expert enjoying special allowance from the State Council of China. He is also Director of Chinese History Society, President of China Research Association of Modern World History, Vice-President China Research Association of British History, President of Henan Association of History, and a visiting professor of London University. He has committed himself to the studies of the History of British Political System, the History of British political thoughts and the History of British aristocracy.

Cheng Minsheng is a distinguished professor in Henan Province, a doctoral supervisor and also an expert enjoying the special allowance from the State Council of China. He is also the Vice-President of China Research Association of Song Dynasty History, and the standing director of China Research Association of Ancient Capitals. He has made great contributions to the academic fields of Song Dynasty History and Chinese economic history.

Li Zhenhong is a distinguished professor in Henan University and a doctoral supervisor. He is Vice-President of China Research Association of History of Qin and Han Dynasties, standing director of China Research Association of historiography, and vice president of board directors of China Research Association of the history of Chinese Peasant Wars. He has attained remarkable achievements in the academic fields of historical theories, history of ancient Chinese thought and culture, and unearthed documents.

Jia Yuying is a distinguished professor in Henan University and a doctoral supervisor. She has been honored as a National Model Teacher and appointed as an expert of Henan province. She has committed herself to the studies of the history of Song Dynasty, the history of the supervisory system of ancient China and history of tourism and culture.

Li Yujie is a distinguished professor in Henan University and a doctoral supervisor. She is an expert in history of pre-Qin period and history of thought and culture of pre-Qin period.

Huang Zhenglin is a professor of Henan University and also a scholar in the research institute of Yellow River Civilization and Sustainable Development. He mainly focuses himself on the research of the economic history of modern China, and the economic-social history of tripartite border region of Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia.

Weng Youwei is a distinguished professor in Henan University. His research involves the history of Chinese legal system, political system, and thought and culture in the 20th century.

Miao Shumei is a professor and a doctoral supervisor. She is the current dean of College of History and Culture, director of Chinese Research Association of History of Song Dynasty, a national outstanding teacher and  a young excellent expert on the studies of social sciences in Henan Province. She has been committed herself to the research on and teaching of the bureaucratic system of Song Dynasty and historical documents of Song Dynasty.
