College of Agronomy and Biotechnology


The College of Agronomy and Biotechnology (CAB) has cultivated more than 10,000 graduates since its establishment in 1950; its graduates have made great achievements in agricultural sciences and rural economics; one preeminent representative,Yuan Longping,Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and the first person who obtained the Special Invention Award of China,has been known as “the Father of Hybrid Rice”.

Presently,there are about 85 faculty and staff members,including 16 full professors or research fellows,24 associate professors or associate research fellows,8 Ph D students-supervisors.

The College has 3 departments and 9 research institutes and holds five Ph. D programs including crop sciences, plant sciences,genetics,ecology,biochemistry and molecular biology. Current undergraduate and graduate enrollments are 1080 and 180,respectively. The College hosts the Key Laboratory of Biotechnology and Crop Quality Improvement of the Agricultural Ministry of China,Chongqing Key Discipline of Crop Genetics & Breeding,Chongqing Key Laboratory of Crop Quality Improvement, Chongqing Rapeseed Engineering Research Center,and Chongqing Key Laboratory of Eco-agriculture and Sustainable Development in Three Gorges Reservoir Area; and possesses more than ¥10 million ($ 1.1 million) research equipments,which can provide for researches in crop breeding,crop quality analysis,plant physiology and biochemistry,cyto-genetics,gene mapping,gene cloning,protected cultivation,cultivation and ecology. More than 50 novel crop varieties have been bred by the researchers in the College,producing more than ¥3 billion($ 333 million)social and economic benefits for the farmers. During the past five years,the College has been engaged in more than 100 research items at the state and provincial levels,with the research grants reached more than $ 1.6 million.

Currently,the College has more than ¥15 million research grants ($1.8 million) , predominantly in the basic and applied researches on rice,rapeseed,cotton and wheat,and some of which pioneer the world.
