College of Music


Having involved from the former Music Department subject to the National Normal College for Females in 1940, the Conservatoire of SWU was founded in 1996 as one of the earliest music faculty set up in normal universities and colleges in our country. Our school now has an eighty-member faculty, including twenty-nine professors and assistant professors. Under the school are departments of music, performance arts and choreography, equipped with five teaching and research sections covering the five fields of vocal music, piano playing, musical theory, music instrument and dancing arts. We have an symphony orchestra, an administrative and logistics department as well. Our school boasts an abundant resource for teaching, studying and research, which is composed of a new 7, 0740-square-meter comprehensive teaching building, a 4.200-square-meter building for students to play the music instruments and a collection of over 15,000 books. Its also possessed with over 6,500 pieces of video and audio material, nearly 200 pianos (including three platform pianos for playing performance, branded Stan we, Mendelssohn and Yamaha respectively), more than 300 pieces of Chinese and western music instruments, and acoustic and electronic equipment worth more than one million yuan.

For the time being, our school has music arts, choreography and musical performance for undergraduate majors. Meantime, we also provide Masters and Doctoral degrees. Acting on the flexible program of credit system, our school has established various courses, ranging from compulsory courses, through unlimited optional courses to limited optional courses. Now there are over 435 full-time undergraduates and 62 graduates, and we enjoy an employment rate of as high as above 90%.

As regard to international exchange, we have been actively launching transnational communication in recent years. We have separately invited experts and scholars from the US, Japan, Russia and Germany to give lectures in our school, and have had acting groups form the US, Switzerland, Germany and Africa give performance. Up to date, we have established friendly relations with such conservatoires as Toronto University of Canada, Genesee Music School of Russia, the State University of Michigan of the US, the Science and Technology University of Malaya and Northwest University of Thailand. Scholars, teachers and students are sent to visit each other in order to promote exchange. At the same time, we plan to cooperate in educational programs by having mutual recognition of credits or by nurturing consecutive undergraduate-to-gradates on a  principle.

Due to our unremittingly making definite our direction for running our school, supervising our quality of education and implementing the credit system of teaching, there has emerged  great many students majoring in performance arts winning national and international rewards, as well as famous experts and scholars teaching at higher learning institutions all over the country. In addition, encouraging achievements have been made in the aspect of discipline construction, teaching and scientific research, faculty building and personnel nurturing.
