School of Foreign Studies

School of Foreign Studies (SFS) at Jiangnan University has a history dating back to the amalgamation of three Foreign Language Departments of the former Wuxi Light Industry University, Jiangnan College and Wuxi Institute of Education. First as the Department of Foreign Languages and since 1995 under its present name, SFS continues to build on its heritage of academic excellence. It is now one of the finest research and training centers for the study of foreign languages, literature and culture in Wuxi.

SFS has two departments: English and Japanese. Current enrollment is about 950 students in BA and MA programs. The key asset of SFS is its dynamic, internationally educated faculty. Of its 153 faculty members, 35 are professors and associate professors and many of them have studied abroad.

SFS's reputation for excellence keeps growing as it continues to improve its curriculum, teaching methods and educational technology to meet the challenges of China's rapid social and economic development. Every year through the programs of its two departments, SFS graduates large numbers of qualified young men and women who find positions in the fields of foreign affairs, foreign trade, finance, journalism, education, publishing and cultural exchange.

During the past ten years, the faculty has conducted three Social Sciences Research Projects commissioned by China's Ministry of Education and 8 Social Sciences Research Projects approved by Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education. Its individual faculty members have published monographs, textbooks, translations and academic papers, some of which have won awards from different authorities. Ongoing research is carried out through specialized research institutes, including Institute of Applied Linguistics, Institute of British and American Literature, Institute of Translation Studies, Institute of College English Education, Institute of Foreign Languages Education, and Institute of Japanese Language and Culture. These institutes, along with the teaching departments, regularly hold academic symposiums which draw scholars from home and abroad.

SFS has never faced greater challenges. With an ever renewed commitment to high standards, integrity, perseverance and creativity, SFS will continue to participate in the development of the nation and the growth of the students.
