School of Fashion Design (School of Arts Design)

The School of Art and Design and the School of Fashion were established in the early 1980s, and formed its own characteristics over the years of development.

(1) Application-oriented
Students are encouraged to take part in various kinds of competitions and have won more than 100 prizes at national or provincial level for their works. They are also encouraged to use what they learn in practice, which, in turn, improves their comprehensive abilities by shedding light upon what to learn and how to be better. In the joint graduate project exhibition of four art universities in Zhejiang province in 2003 and 2004, our students’ works was thought highly of by the public as well as experts.

(2) Serving for the local economy
Graduates from the School are well-received by the society because of their sound professional knowledge and innovativeness. For example, Mr. Zhao Caobo was honored as “Excellent worker in the Province” for his achievements in teaching art and design in middle school; Mr. Qi Gang and Mr. Hu Xiaoming both won the title of “Top 10 Excellent Fashion Designer in China”, to name but a few. Many graduates take positions of design directors and became the backbones in their respective companies. Some set up their own businesses and establish their own brand. Brands like Sakura Show, Roman Mood and Zhoushiyilin enjoy a high degree of recognition in the industry. Over 1000 graduates are currently working in fashion and design industry and contribute to the social and economic development.

Key disciplines
Key discipline at Provincial level – Art Design
Art Design programme was set up in 1988, and in 2002 it was selected as one of the key disciplines supported by provincial education authority and became a provincial level key discipline in 2005. In the past five years, 160 research papers have been published, 40 of them in core journals; 29 academic books published and 117 projects were successfully completed and the research fund reached 2.36 million RMB in total.

The programme has a contingent of excellent teaching staff with a rational age structure and with various research directions, from fashion design, art design basis to environmental design, which contributes to an integrated system of training high-level talents. In recent years, with more professionals joining in and the cooperation with German universities, the programme enjoys an ever-rising academic status and influence in the relevant fields at home. It has taken leading position within Zhejiang province.

Key discipline at University level– Fashion Design
The feature and focus of fashion design is lady’s wear design and its marketing. The University is one of the few colleges and universities in China that offered fashion design programme in early 1980s. Local fashion enterprises excel in both scale and economic performance. Particularly, with the implementation of a strategy promoting the brand of “Hangzhou-style lady’s wear”, fashion designers are in great demand.

The programme of fashion design focuses on the research into lady’s wear and makes great achievements. With the implementation of the Sino-German DAAD project from 1998, over 30 teachers and students were dispatched to the Hannover University of Applied Science for further study and academic exchange. The School also completed several provincial or national level research projects. Two graduates won the title of “Top 10 Excellent Fashion Designer in China”. Many graduates and teachers are also part-time designers in branded lady’s wear enterprises. Their innovation awareness and competency constitute their strong points and advantages over other competitors, exerting great influence in the field of fashion design in China.
