Entry to China
Foreign students should enter Wuhan University with their passports. Residence License should be obtained after. Students who come for short-term further studies or for internship can enter China with Visa for visits (F visa).
 
Foreign students should provide the university with the information of entry, passport, visa and relevant documents and consult issues relating to certificate application.
 
Foreign students should go through Residence License within 30 days since their entry. Or their stay will be regarded as illegal.
 
Those who enter China illegally will be fined 1000 RMB to 10000 RMB, or be detained for more than 3 days and less than 10 days. They might be deported or expelled in case of a serious situation. Those serious cases as committing crime in China will be given criminal sanctions.
 
Accommodation
According to Regulation of Foreigners’ Entry and Exit in P. R. China, students should register accommodation and fill in Registration for Provisional Accommodation after their entry. Those who accommodate in hotels or foreign students buildings on campus should declare it to hotels or College of Foreign Students Education. Those who accommodate in other places (including home of local residents, inside the enterprises) should declare it to the local police station.
 
Those who live in urban areas should declare it within 24 hours; those who live in rural area should declare it within 72 hours.
 
Registration of Provisional Accommodation should be filled in clearly and completely with proper foreign abbreviations.
 
Changes on accommodation should be declared on time. Those who have applied for Residence License accommodate at the places registered rather than declaring accommodation registration. Those who leave the places registered and accommodate contemporarily at other places (e.g. home of Chinese or foreign friends) should declare.
 
Those who fail to complete such accommodation registrations or stay without any valid certificates will be fined 50 to 500 RMB in accordance with Regulations of Foreigners’ Entry and Exit in P. R. China.
 
Physical examination
Physical examination is required for all the new students. Only the healthy students passing the physical examination can study at the university.
 
Students whose duration of study is six months or more must take the physical examination.
 
For the preparation for Residence License, new foreign students must take the physical examination within one week after their arrival at Wuhan University.

Items of physical examination
Students should provide the physical examination report with their own photos sealed. The blood serum report of the examination should contain items as following:
Anti-HIV, PR, TPPA, HbsAg, AntiHCV, ALT/GPT, etc. X-ray examination report and sternum.

Total examination of the body: 475 RMB, 20 RMB more for urgent request (all results will come out within 3 days)
Verification: 100 RMB
Syphilis: 100 RMB
HIV: 80 RMB
X-ray: 40 RMB
Hepatitis A, B, C and liver function:  RMB  
 
Prescription for illegal working of foreign students
During the study in China, foreign students are forbidden to work, do business or other commercial activities, but they can take a part-time job while studying at the university according to the prescription of Wuhan University.
 
Those part-time jobs while studying at university without the recognition of Wuhan University, such as employment at language training and teaching institutions in the society will be regarded as illegal job seeking.
 
Students who engage in illegal job seeking will be fined less than 1000 RMB besides the termination of the work or the position. They may be deported within a limited time if the situation is serious. Those institutions or individuals who employ foreigners privately will be fined more than 5000 RMB and less than 50000 RMB besides the termination of their employment. They will be also ordered to pay for all the fees to deport the foreigners employed.
 
Postal services
There are 4 post offices on the campus of Wuhan University. Foreign students can choose among them for postal services at their conveniences. The addresses are:
 
Division 1 (Faculty of Liberal Arts and Science): Post Office of Maple Garden
Division 2 (Faculty of Engineering): Post Office of Hydraulic and Electrical Engineering, opposite Tianyuan Restaurant.
Division 3 (Faculty of Information): opposite College of Electronic Information
Division 4 (Faculty of Medicine): the main gate of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University
 
Students get their registered mails, packages or remittance with valid certificates (Passport or Student ID card) in the post office.
 
Inform your family or friends of the correct mailing address to ensure that you can receive their letters on time. The envelope is generally written in Chinese or English.
 

Envelopes of mails sent to abroad can be written in the international format. If they are written in the languages except English or French, names of the countries and cities of the mail address should be written in Chinese, English or French.
 
Currency (money) and bank
Currency circulated in China is only Renminbi (abbreviated as RMB), whose basic unit is Yuan and fractional currency is Jiao. RMB has different kinds of money forms of value such as 100 Yuan, 50 Yuan, 20 Yuan, 10 Yuan, 5 Yuan, 2 Yuan, 1 Yuan, 5 Jiao, 2 Jiao and 1 Jiao. Coins have such forms of values as 1 Yuan, 5 Jiao and 1 Jiao.
 
Bank of China, Wuhan Commercial Bank and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China are located beside the affiliated hospital on the 1st campus (Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences). On the 2nd campus (Faculty of Engineering), Bank of China and China Merchants Bank are located opposite Tianyuan Restaurant; beside Ziqiang supermarket there is an Industrial and Commercial Bank of China; China Construction Bank is beside campus gate at Chagang. All those banks offer deposit and deposit withdrawal services in RMB and Foreign Currencies of various kinds. Passport and Residence License are needed to open an account. There are 7 currencies.
 
Bank of China offers services of currency exchange (including traveler’s cheque and etc.) and deposit of RMB and foreign currencies. Passport and Residence License need to be provided for currency exchange. For more details, please consult with banks.
 
Don’t exchange currencies on the streets so as to avoid losses.

Transportation in the city
Many bus routes are available around Wuhan University, so it is quite convenient. However, due to the development of Wuhan, there will be frequent changes on bus routes and bus stations, it is necessary to observe and master such changes.
 
Do stand steadily on the bus and fasten the security belt on taxi. Follow the traffic rules strictly, especially in expressway. Keep an eye on your properties and certificates when taking a bus.

Taxi service is also very convenient in China. The fee is charged by distance. Empty Taxi has a red sign of “空车(empty)” near the front baffle. Please keep the invoice printed when you get off, you can contact the taxi or the taxi’s company in case of any problems.
 
Holidays and festivals
Foreign students enjoy the same holidays and festivals as Chinese students. Regarding the holidays or festivals of other countries, there will be no holidays at Wuhan University. The academic calendar has the holiday schedule of each year. Wuhan University issues the notice for it before the holiday.
 
Beside summer vacation and winter vacation, other main festivals in China include:

NOTES
1. Bedding for self-financed students is equipped and delivered uniformly by Logistics Office, College of Foreign Students Education.
2. Scholarship students can purchase bedding by themselves. They can also purchase it in Logistics Office, College of Foreign Students Education. (260 RMB for each set)
 
Eating and other life services
There are many dining halls on the campus of Wuhan University (also run by Wuhan University). Moreover, there are many restaurants or nosheries (operated socially) with higher consumption than the dining halls. Supermarkets are available on the campus where students can purchase food and commodities. The majority of life service facilities are around the dormitories for foreign students. Other kinds of service facilities on the campus are also comprehensive, for example, hospital, post office, bank, bookstore, laundry, barber shop, photo studio, stadium and etc to meet various life demands of students. To make life and study convenience, Wuhan University prints a map of itself to help students find out the location of those faculties.
 
Security clues
Security Institution of Wuhan University provides sufficient protection for the study and life of students. Meanwhile, they do also hope students can improve the vigilance for no risk at all. First of all, students should take care of their passports and valuable articles. Do not bring the passport and a large amount of cash with you (Student ID card can certify student’s identity sufficiently at Wuhan University and in Wuhan).
 
Do lock carefully when you put the valuable goods in the room. Remember to close the windows and doors and turn down the electricity and water switches before leaving the room.
 
Do obey the traffic rules on the streets. Dial 027-110 in case of any problems, and report them to Students Affairs Office immediately. The staff members in Students Affairs Office will render timely help to those in need.
