A half decade of development: facts and figures


Since 2006, the University has strengthened its efforts on talents attraction and a strong faculty team has been promoted with the aim to foster high caliber innovative minds with international perspective. The University is also dedicated to social commitment. It takes an active role in involving in national and regional development and has enhanced its discipline development and scientific research in meeting national and regional strategic demands. The following data gathered provides information on the development of the University from 2006.

HUST earned six state scientific and technologic awards in 2010 as the first participant which is ranked first among national universities. During the five years between 2006 and 2011, HUST in total won 18 scientific and technologic awards, of which, four is state natural science awards.

 

HUST scholars published a paper on Science and Nature Genetics for the first time. The research team headed by Prof. Luo Qingming published a paper on Science, one of the top-grade academic journals. The research team headed by Prof. Qing K. Wang published a paper online on Nature Genetics. In addition, PhD candidate Zhang Xianqin published a paper on Cell, which is a breakthrough for PhD candidates to publish papers on the world top three academic journals.

The accumulated scientific funding amounts to RMB 4.7 billion, double that of the previous five years RMB 2.276 billion.

 

Two bases for combating corruption and building a clean government were launched at HUST’s  College of Public Administration after signing the cooperative agreement with Hubei provincial committee for discipline inspection and Hubei provincial department of supervision.

Three professors are elected as new academicians.
Prof. Cheng Shijie and Prof. Luo Jun are honored members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Prof. Duan Zhengcheng is honored member of Chinese Academy of Engineering.


Three projects of 111 Program were obtained by the State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion, Wuhan National Laboratory of Optoelectronics and the School of Life Science and Technology. 111 Program is a talents attraction initiative for higher education institutions’ discipline innovation jointly launched by State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and the Ministry of Education. 


Targeting respectively at undergraduates and PhD candidates, HUST set up three special regions for fostering top-notch innovative talents. Qiming School and Innovative Institute were launched in partnership with the industry and  the bird nest initiative was carried out with international renowned scholars, with the aim to foster future outstanding personnel with innovative capabilities and global perspective.

The University won four major projects of the national social science foundation, undertook 70 projects of the national social science foundation. The research funding for the schools of humanities amounts to RMB 0.13 billion.


Four major independent innovative platforms have been established with Wuhan City.  HUST actively involves in the development of East Lake National Independent Innovation Demonstrative Zone. HUST signed all-round strategic cooperative agreement with Wuhan city in March 2010, in a bid to jointly build Wuhan New Energy Institute, Biomedical Research Center of Wuhan Biotechnology Institute, Wuhan Industrial Technology Institute, Wuhan Eco-City Institute, etc, and to promote the decision making and consultation platform and medical service center in the Central areas.

The projects and total amount of national natural science foundation is ranked 6th in five years in a row, with the total number of projects reaching 1626.


Six members of the standing committee of CPC Political Bureau inspected HUST. They affirmed the achievements the University has made and encouraged us to step up efforts on independent innovation and talents cultivation.


Major special project funding is rated 6th, with 121 major research projects amounting RMB 0.514 billion.


The Unique Studio has advanced to the worldwide finals of Microsoft Imagine Cup for six consecutive years. The team won the global champion twice in IT challenge.

HUST is ranked top 1% in seven categories, namely engineering, material science, physics, clinical medicine, chemistry, computer science and pharmacology and toxicology.

 

Seven disciplines are rated national key disciplines covering 25 sub-disciplines. 15 disciplines are rated national key sub-disciplines.  Western economics, higher education and biophysics are evaluated as national key disciplines, a breakthrough in the arts and science discipline development.

11 national scientific innovative platforms are set up including Wuhan National Pulsed Magnetic Field Center and National Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacturing Equipment and Technology. In total, 25 innovative platforms of national level have been established.

24 scholars are shortlisted for Thousand Talents Scheme. There are 41 Cheung Kung Scholars, with the total number of Cheung Kong Scholars reaching 66.

26 programs are rated as national distinguishing featured program and 28 are brand programs of Hubei Province. Clinical medicine won the standard accreditation of international medical education.

HUST is also committed to social services. HUST-Enterprise Collaboration Committee was set up in Dec 2009. 30 domestic well-known enterprises joined the committee and became the first member enterprises including SANY, C-Bons, Wuhan Iron Steel. Dongguan-HUST manufacturing engineering research institute was acclaimed for its active role in regional innovative development and the building of Shanghai Expo.

The authorized PhD discipline rises to 35 from 19, and the authorized master program rises to 48 from19.

HUST has expanded its international cooperation by entering partnership with 90 international universities and launching international cooperative platforms such as Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center, ITER center, China-US CERC. The University is also making efforts to promote the China-EU Clean and Renewable Energy Institute. HUST set up two Confucius Institutes in Wayne State University, US and at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
