School of Physics>> INTRODUCTION Welcome to the School of Physics at Huazhong University of Science and Technology School of Physics, a young and promising member of HUST (Huazhong University of Science and Technology), has been founded in 2008. It was expanded from the Department of Physics which was established in 1983. The School of Physics consists of eight administrative divisions: Center for Theoretical Physics, Center for Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Physics, Center for Optics, Center for Radiophysics, Center for Plasma Physics, Physics Majors teaching center, General Physics teaching Center and Physics Experiments Teaching Center. At present, the School of Physics has more than 100 faculty and administrative staff, including one Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, two “Cheung Kong” Scholars, 29 full professors, 23 associate professors and two senior engineers. We have three Distinguished Young Scholars sponsored by the National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and one NSFC Creative Research Group (the Center for Gravitational Experiments and Theory). The faculty staff in our school involve actively in the fields of Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Physics, Biophysics, Optics, Plasma Physics, Astrophysics and Space Physics, and Radiophysics. We use facilities located in the main campus and some ultra-precision equipments and instruments are installed at the national laboratories, such as the Key Laboratory of Fundamental Physical Quantities Measurements of the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of Gravity and Quantum Physics of Hubei Province and the Gravity and the Earth Tide Observation Stations of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Authorized by the Ministry of Education in 2003, the School of Physics can confer PhD degree for all minor-fields in physics, including Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Physics and Chemistry, Optics, Theoretical Physics, Radiophysics, and Plasma Physics. Since 1983, more than 1000 students have been conferred bachelor degree, 350 students have been conferred master’s and doctor’s degree. Our graduates at all levels have distinguished themselves in academic, industrial, and governmental careers. In recent years, the School of Physics gets research grants with total amount of more than ten million RMB each year for various fundamental science and engineering research foundations, for instance, the National Natural Science Foundation, National Key Program of Basic Research Development, National High Technology Research and Development Program, and so on. In addition, more than 150 academic papers cited by SCI are published every year on the top international academic journals.
