School of Pharmacy

Tongji School of Pharmacy, Huazhong University of Science and Technology was founded in 1971, and officially enrolled students of pharmacy major in 1972. In 1996 and 2000, two new professional directions, "Pharmaceutical business and trade" and "clinical pharmacy", were founded. In 2001, Chinese traditional medicine major was founded. In 2003, National Life Science and Technology Training Base (Biological Pharmacy direction) was officially founded and started enrolling students. After a journey of three decades, College of Pharmacy has gradually grow into a high-level base for training pharmaceutical professionals with more than 5,000 pharmaceutical graduates at various levels.

Since 2000, the institute has entered a booming stage. It has made outstanding achievements in the construction of an outstanding teaching staff, researching teams and centers as well as professional personnel retraining. The College currently has more than 80 employees, including 14 professors and 18 associate professors, 28 technicians and administrators. The school currently has one adjunct academian, one “Cheung Kong Scholar”, two new century excellent talents, two “Chutian Scholar”. Teachers have gradually become younger, 98% of young teachers are holding master's degree or higher. 35 faculties have PhD degree. Sixteen faculty members have visited the United States, Germany, Japan, Britain, Italy, Switzerland and other countries as exchanging scholars, and 4 of them are still studying abroad. Our faculty members have been selected or invited to be advisors or consultants of many influential domestic academic and research institutions, ten faculty members have been awarded special government subsidy of the State Council, three professors are serving the national review board for the new drugs, one professor has been awarded with outstanding contributions to the National Ministry of Health, three faculty members are members of the Professional Committee of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, four faculties are serving as the executive director of the Pharmaceutical Society of Hubei Province, with two serve as deputy secretary-general, and two as the chair and associate chair of the professional committee.

In April 2007, School of Pharmacy founded the departments of pharmacy, the Chinese traditional pharmacy and the biology pharmacy, together with Experimental teaching centers, Analysis and testing center and the affiliated drug research institute. Currently, the school has a post-doctoral mobile station of pharmacy, a pharmacology PhD authorization and six master's degree authorization, including pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacy, pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical analysis and the Chinese traditional pharmacy (first discipline). The school has nine doctoral tutors and 26 Master's tutors. And we have trained more than 300 graduate students. Medicinal chemistry, pharmacy doctorate authorized point have been included in Academic Degrees Committee of Hubei Province. State Licensed Pharmacist Training Center of Hubei Province is located in our school, and we have trained nearly 3,000 pharmacists for Hubei Province.

In recent years, our school has continued to increase number of undergraduate enrollment. It has formed a post-graduate education, undergraduate education, adult education, web-based education, continuing education and other levels of the education model and school-running pattern. The school has now enrolled 800 undergraduate students, with 84 theoretical courses and 22 experimental courses provided.

The school has set 12 teaching practice bases outside school that provide practice opportunities of comprehensive internship, field internships and special internship for undergraduate students. Quality of teaching is improved continuously. Hands-on ability and innovation capacity of students are strengthened. The teaching teams have won 8 subjects funded by Provincial Department of Education and many provincial teaching research prize. In the past 5 years, construction of teaching textbooks has made remarkable achievements. The faculty members have been editors or associate editors of 10 textbooks supported by the Ministry of Education in the 21st century or the national pharmaceutical integration, or editors of 23 National integration textbooks. 16 standard chemical laboratories have been established that provide undergraduate state of art experimental environments.

Basic theory and new drug research and development are both improved. We have received over 20 funding supports from the National Natural Science Foundations, and over 80 from national ministerial or provincial scientific research projects. There are 19 new drugs being developed in the school, including 8 second-class drugs and over 10 new drugs. We have been awarded with over 10 patents, and we are publishing 100 papers per year, a number of them won provincial and municipal Excellent Paper Award. The number of SCI indexed paper is increasing rapidly every year.
