Network and Computer Center

The Network and Computer Center was set up in July 2005, whose predecessor HUST Computation Center was founded in 1982. Through over 20 years endeavor, it has been developed into a top-notch information infrastructure base known across the nation. At present, it consists mainly of the Network Center (including the Central China Area Network Center, Hubei Host Node and the Campus Network Center), the Open Laboratories, the Teaching and Research Group of Computer Basics, the IBM Computer Technology Center, the East Campus Computer Laboratories, Tongji Campus Computer Laboratories, the Office and the Training Department. It is an open service rendering comprehensive organ with education, experimentation, information service and scientific research integrated into an organic whole and oriented to the whole nation, the entire area of Central China as well as the entire university.

The Network and Computation Center is the university’s important base of information infrastructure, where many sophisticated modern-time information equipments are installed, viz. the kilomega campus net, the Chinese Educational and Research Net (CERNET), and two sets of IBM large computers. It is through this center that the information networks of all the other institutions of higher education and many other organizations in Central China are connected with the whole nation and the rest of the world and have obtained good service. Meanwhile, it is also an important base of this university for research on network information security and the relevant software development.

As the university’s important teaching experimental base, the Network and Computer Center has under it a Network Laboratory, a Digital Art Specialty Laboratory, three Large Computer Basics Laboratories and an IBM Computation Center. Privileged to have a good network environment and experimenting conditions with the installation of 10 groups (80 sets) of network experimental equipments, 35 sets of digital art specialty experimental equipments, 2 sets each of large and small computers, and more than 1500 microcomputers, the center is currently one of the laboratories for computer basics education in all institutions of higher education in the nation that are largest in scale, best in conditions, most easily accessed, and managed in an advanced manner. At the same time, it is one of the examination sites for exams in the grading of proficiency in computer science in the Hubei area, which has such relevant organs as the CISCO Network College and the IBM- and VUE-authorized centers for training and examination.

The Network and Computer Center now has 70 academic and administrative staff members, of whom 2 are professors, 17 are associate professors and senior engineers. For over 20-odd years, more than 200 doctoral and master’s candidates have been trained one after another in addition to several hundred junior college students. More than 10 major research and engineering projects have been completed, over 200 papers published, and fairly many monographs and textbooks compiled.
