School of Mechanical Science and EngineeringINTRODUCTION MSE has now 291 faculty and staff, including 71 professors and 80 associate professors, among them there are 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 8 Cheung Kong Scholars, 2 Chief Scientists in the National 973 Program(State Key Fundamental Research Program in China), 4 Winners of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars. It is the uppermost mission for the School to nurture a new generation of talented people in the field of mechanical engineering. The school has 4 Undergraduate Programs, 10 Master-degree Programs, 8 Ph.D Programs and 1 Post-doctoral Program. Each year the school enrolls 500 undergraduates, 270 graduates and 80 PhD. Currently 3 PhD students have been awarded the Prize of the National One Hundred Excellent PhD Thesises. To achieve its full capacity in the teaching in mechanical engineering, MSE has brought forth 1 State Excellent Teacher, 2 State Excellent Teaching Groups. Six core courses for undergraduate have been recognized as National Sample Courses. In addition, the faculty members have published over 100 curriculum materials. In the past 5 years, students from MSE have triumphed in numbers of scholastic contests like National Mechanical Innovation and Design Competition, Microsoft Innovation Cup, CCTV Robot Contest, International Math Modeling Contest, International Robot Football Contest, etc. Now the graduate employment rate is 99% while the undergraduate's is 97%. Most of them are well received by famous innovative corporations like Microsoft, P&G, GE, HUAWEI, SIEMENS, BOSCH, etc. The objective of MSE is to achieve global prestige. Its philosophy features the“STAR Spirit”——"Striving, Teamwork, Agility, Responsibility". HISTORY School of Mechanical Science and Engineering (MSE), one of the earliest established schools in Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), was founded in 1953 as an amalgamation of four then Mechanical Engineering Departments from Wuhan University, Hunan University, Nanchang University and Guangxi University respectively. At early stage after its founding, MSE had successfully attracted and gathered many talents from universities in Europe, the United States, Japan and some domestic universities, among whom many have become outstanding scientists, educationists like Academician Yang Shuzi, Academician Xiong YouLun, Academician Zhou Ji (ex-Minister of Education of China) and Academician Li Peigen (President of HUST). Over the past 56 years, MSE has developed its own philosophy and merits as well as prominent contributions to the economic prosperity and the progress in science and technology in mechanical theory and manufacturing practice in China. Since the 1980s, MSE has fully exercised its advantages of interdisciplinary programs to boost its development. Many measures have been taken to develop interdisciplinary programs with computer science, automation, life science, laser and microelectronics, as to promote research in Flexible Manufacturing, CAD, CAM, CIMS and MEMS. Eventually the significant contributions to the education, R&D and application of CIMS have been well recognized in the international community, and MSE was awarded the “University LEAD Award” by the American Society of Manufacturing Engineering (SME) in 1999. In the past 10 years, MSE has obtained 7 National Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology and more than 100 prizes at provincial or ministerial level. Apart from that, more than 10 inventions are patented annually. The number of research papers indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP each year keeps at 300 since 2005, and high level research papers are increasing. MSE has always been dedicated to providing talented scholars with a challenging academic atmosphere and advanced research facilities. By far, there are 6 departments, 5 state-level R&D platforms and 3 national key academic disciplines: Mechanical Engineering & Automation, Mechanical Design &Theory and Mechatronic Engineering, among which Mechanical Engineering and Automation ranked the first in China in Disciplines Evaluation in 2002 by Ministry of Education of China. Meanwhile, MSE has achieved the same prominence in cultivating students.Till now, the school has 2 National Teaching Bases and 3 Experiment Centers.
