College of Materials Science and Engineering


The College of Materials Science and Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is one of the key teaching and research bases supported by the State “211 Project” and “985 Project”, with one 1st level State Key Curriculum “Materials Sciences and Engineering” and two 2nd level State Key Curricula “Materials Process Engineering” and “Materials Sciences”, and a new curriculum “Electronic Packaging” is going to be established. It is home to the State Key Laboratory of Material Processing and Die & Mould Technology, the Productivity Promotion Center for Rapid Prototyping Manufacturing of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, and Hubei Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Materials Science and Engineering. The school is authorized to offer Master and PhD degrees and Post-doctoral Research Program in Materials Science and Engineering.

The College of Materials Science and Engineering has a long tradition of excellence in research conducted by its outstanding faculty which currently includes one academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, one Cheung Kong Lecture Scholars, 38 professors (31 of them are qualified PhD candidate supervisors), 28 associate professors and 9 senior Engineers. It is the domestic leader in Computer Simulation of Materials Processing, Rapid Prototyping, Mould CAD/CAE, Materials Laser Processing, Precision molding Technology, Robot-assisted Materials Processing, Nanomaterials, Optoelectronic Materials, Metallic Materials and Electronic Packaging.

The college has been financially supported by national “973”and “863” projects and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) for its research in 2007, totaling over 22 million RMB(about$3.24 million). The school has established long-term collaborations with universities and industries in the US, the UK, France and Singapore, and has achieved significantly in Digitized Materials Processing and Advanced Functional Materials as described below:

1 Digitized Materials Processing

1) Rapid Prototyping and Reverse Engineering: including Laminated Object Manufacturing, Stereo Lithography Apparatus, Selective Laser Sintering, and Selective Laser Melting. A package of technologies in equipment, processing, software and materials is developed and applied in more than 200 domestic and oversea companies.(Prof.Shi Yusheng )

2) Simulation of Materials processing: covering the areas of Foundry, Plate Forming and Plastic Injection Molding. 3 well-known simulation software packages have been developed and used in more than 300 companies worldwide. (Prof. Li Dequn, Prof. Chen Liliang and Prof. Liu Yuqi)

3) Digitized Die Design and Manufacturing: developed mould progressive die, CAD/CAM/CAPP technologies and applications in various kinds of moulds. (Prof. Li Jianjun, Prof. Li Zhigang, Prof. Zhang Yisheng and Prof. Zhou Huaming )

4) Equipment and Automation of Materials Processing: developed multi-model fuzzy controlled hydraulic forging machine, CNC electrical screw press, sheet metal CNC incremental forming machine, the vacuum and low-pressure lost foam Casting process and equipment for Mg (Al) Alloy,digitally controlled electrical screw presser, robot-assisted plasma spray system, etc.(Prof. Mo Jianhua, Prof. Fan Zitian, Prof. Liu Shunhong, Prof. Yu Shengfu, Prof. Wang Guilan)

2 Advanced Functional Materials

1) Nanomaterials and Integration: developed nanomaterials synthesis technologies and devices, including gas sensitive micro arrays and “electronic noses” (Prof. Xie Changsheng and Prof.Zeng Dawen)

2) Bulk Metallic Glass Materials and Applications: developed new bulk metallic glass materials and composites with strong glass-forming capability and excellent properties; studied bio-compatibility and superplasticity of bulk metallic glasses. (Prof.Liu Ling)

3) Solid Oxide Fuel Cell: including SOFC design, materials, fabrication and system integration; successfully developed compressive sealing materials, metallic interconnect materials and commercial SOFC testing facilities.(Prof.Li Jian and Prof.Huang Yunhui)

4) Thermoelectric Materials: successfully deposited VA-VIA nano-scale semiconductor compound film by electrochemical atom epitaxy; invented solid reaction method for Skutterudite compound fabrication; developed testing system of thermoelectric semiconductor and fabrication facility for ECALE and MA-PAS materials.(Prof. Yang Junyou)

5) Functional ceramic materials: Developed Ti(C, N)-based cermet with high red-hardness, enhanced high temperature wearability, oxidation resistance and impact resistance; fabricated functional oxygen sensors, ceramic-polymer based moulds, medicine carrying materials, bone-repairing materials and specialty ceramics.(Prof. Xiong Weihao, Prof. Xiao Jianzhong, Prof. Hu Shubing and Prof.Suo Jingping)

Areas of study have been expanded and interdisciplinary fusion has been enhanced. In 2007, the School of Material Science & Engineering has taken some successful applications of National Project, including 973 Project, 863 Project and NSFC. And the national longitudinal funding is more than 22 million RMB (about$0.32 million)in 2007.

The college has developed the targets of the 11th Five-Year Plan about Subject construction. “Material Science & Engineering” has a domestic advanced level (top 10), “Material Processing” keeps as a national key discipline and has a domestic leading level, undergraduate teaching in “Material Forming & Control Engineering” and “Material Science & Engineering” rank to national forefront, graduate education in “Material Processing” and “Material Science” lies domestic advanced level.
