Institute of Historical Studies


The Institute of Historical Studies consists of 14 faculty and staff, including 3 professors, 3 adjunct professors, 7 lecturers and 1 administrator. There are 3 doctoral supervisors, 7 supervisors for mater students, 11 of whom hold doctoral degree and 1 act as Member of the Historical Studies Education Directory Commission of the Ministry of Education.

Faculty either graduated or used to work in Peking University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Fudan University, Wuhan Univesrity, Huazhong Normal University and Hubei Academy of Social Sciences. Most of the faculty are young scholars who have accomplished academic achievements and are endowed with solid academic background. The research domains include the Ancient Chinese History before Qin Dynasty, the History of Qin and Han Dynasties, the History of Wei, Jin, South and North Dynasties, the History of Song Dynasty and Contemporary and Modern Chinese History.

Below are the major disciplines in the Institute:

1. The History of Politics and Academic Culture in Song Dynasty Prof. Luo Jiaxiang assumes responsibility for this discipline, which consists of the History of Cultures in Song Dynasty (master and doctoral program), the History of Chinese Politics and Culture (master program) and Chinese Learning.

2. The History of Chinese Folk Culture Prof. Lei Jiahong assumes the responsibility of this research domain, which consists of master programs including the History of Chinese Folk Culture and History and Cultural Tourism.

3. The History of Cultures in Wei, Jin, South and North Dynasties Prof. Li Chuanyin is in charge of this research domain including two master programs, the History of Cultures in Wei, Jin, South and North Dynasties and History of Thought.

In recent years, a number of academic books and translated books have been published, such as Research on Politics and Academics of Song Dynasty, A Glimpse at the Society and Culture of Song Dynasty, The Relations between Historical and Political Studies of Wei, Jin, South and North Dynasties, etc. The institute has undertaken two projects of the National Social Science Fund and several projects of national, provincial and ministerial scientific research. Awards include the first prize of Hubei Provincial Excellent Social Science Achievement and Wuhan Social Science Achievement Award.
