School of Hydropower and Information Engineering


The School of Hydropower and Information Engineering was established in March 2001. Its predecessor is the Huazhong University of Water Resources and Hydropower and Automation Engineering. It is one of the first batch of key disciplines set up and aided by the former Soviet Union, also the establishment of the first batch of key disciplines approved by the Academic Committee of the State Council. It boasts one of the first batch of post-doctoral research centers authorized by the Academic Committee of the State Council and a national "211 Project" construction of key disciplines organization. Nearly five decades, through generations of hard work and struggle, the College has been in related fields at a first-class level, and hydropower energy planning, design, development, operation, control and computer numerical simulation and three-dimensional visualization of virtual reality information systems technology and interdisciplinary field of study among the domestic leading position. We have conducted researches to obtain the academic reputation at home and abroad.

The College has been formed to improve the water efficiency of energy utilization goals, with information, simulation and control of science, relying on the system of scientific theory as a base to watershed resources, sustainable development and socio-economic and environmental systems of the mutual promotion and development, as well as the national economy long-term goal-fire and water of nuclear energy, rational structure and the overall context of electricity market development in the hydropower energy development and utilization of a systematic study of the main areas, comprehensive solution to the key technologies for hydroelectric energy projects and major problems. We have made comprehensive development and utilization of hydropower resources, computer simulation and visualization of virtual reality technology, key technologies of geographic information systems, water system, integrated control and information processing, dam safety and engineering geological theory, computer networks and communication technologies, the electricity market operations, and enterprise management, urban construction and planning, system analysis and integration of cutting-edge research firms and international academic standards. We have access to a number of national scientific and technological progress, including the first prize in the international academic community, encompassing influential research, academic papers and monographs. We have obtained enormous social and economic benefits, as a shaving basin level in the development and utilization of hydropower resources and regional economic areas of systematic research and simulation, and have some international influence of the research, development and education base.

First-class universities are to cultivate and bring up the cradle of high-quality creative talents. At present, the College has the following master programs: Water conservancy and hydropower engineering, Hydrology total water resources, spatial information science and technology, systems analysis and integration (science). We focus on cultivating graduate students with an annual intake of about 20 doctoral, Master's of about 120, and about 70 undergraduate students. At the undergraduate and postgraduate training, we put equal emphasis on teaching and research and aim to cultivating students’ scientific and technological innovation. For a long time, we have trained a large number of doctoral and master graduates with a high-level professional technical and management personnel.
