School of Energy and Power Engineering

After more than half a century of evolution, the School of Energy and Power Engineering, founded in October 1953 at the Huazhong Institute of Technology, has been developed into the School of Energy and Power Engineering of today’s Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

The school started its undergraduate program at the beginning of 1950s, and graduate program in 1960s. Its complete discipline system was gradually established during 1970s. In 1981, the school was granted to set up master degree program and PhD program in two disciplines: Power Station Thermal Power Engineering and Internal Combustion Engine. In 1984 and 1990, PhD program was successively granted for Engineering Thermo Physics, Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering and Thermal Energy Engineering. The discipline of Power Station Thermal Power Engineering became a state key discipline in 1988. At the same year, the set-up of the State Key Laboratory for Coal Combustion was approved. This laboratory was completed and opened to public in 1991. Also in 1991 the post-doctoral research centers were established for the Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics respectively. In 1998 the school received certification to grant PhD degree for its first-class disciplines in these two fields. The discipline of Thermal Power Engineering was evaluated as a state key discipline again in 2001. In 2005 the Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics post-doctoral centers were titled 'State Outstanding Post-doctoral Centers'. In 2007s the Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics were evaluated as primary subject National Key Discipline.

Now, there are 8 PhD programs, namely Thermal Power Engineering, Engineering Thermo-physics, Power Machinery Engineering, Fluid Machinery and Engineering, Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering, Chemical Processing Machinery, Energy and Environmental Engineering, Power Engineering Automation, as well as seven research units (departments and research institutes) in the school. A platform for innovation and creativity has emerged from the endowment in the '211' and '985' state key projects, supported by the State Key Laboratory for Coal Combustion and a base for teaching practice in Energy and Power Engineering. The School also endeavors to build China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy (ICARE) to make contributions to energy conservation and emission reduction.

The school now has 150 faculty and staff, including 36 professors, 26 of whom are doctor supervisors, 37 associate professors. Seventy percent of its teachers have Ph D degree. In recent years, two persons have been appointed twice as chief scientists of China's '973 Project', and experts in energy field of '863 Project'; two received funds from 'China's Outstanding Youth Foundation'; three have been entitled Cheung Kong Scholars; one has become a candidate of 'China's million exceptional experts project'; two have won the national reward as 'Outstanding Young Teachers in University'; four received 'New Century talents' awarded by the Ministry of Education; three were entitled 'Elite Teachers' by the Ministry of Education; one received 'Fok Ying Tong Foundation'.

The school boasts its exceptional team for innovation for the National Natural Science Foundation of China, an outstanding team in the 'Cheung Kong Scholars and Creative Group Development Project' (“985” project) of the Ministry of Education, pioneers in the country, and a creative team for the Natural Science Foundation of Hubei. Some of the faculty are members of Academic Degree Committee of the State Council. Some are in the evaluation teams of China's Science and Technology Award. Some are in the evaluation teams in the China's Natural Science Foundation Committee, etc.

The school major research fields are: pollutant emission mechanism and prevention & treatment of coal and oil combustion; fluid mechanics and its heat transfer characteristics in turbulence combustion reactions; high-effective, low polluting combustion technology; test, diagnosis and optimization control of coal combustion; energy & power equipment and device security assessment & problem diagnosis; thermophysics testing technology; multi-phase flow and enhancement of heat transfer; heat and mass transfer under extreme space environmental condition; bio-heat transfer; new energy and new technology of energy saving; new technology of high-effective, low pollution and high-efficient generators; electronic control of IC engine; refrigeration and heat & mass transfer of cryogenic engineering;fluid mechanism and complex flow in engineering; solar energy, wind energy, bioenergy, nuclear energy; numerical simulation and emulation of energy & power system.

Since the 11th 'Five -Year Plan' of China, the school has completed more than 300 scientific researches for central, local government and enterprises, and has received funding of almost 100 million yuan(about $14.71 million). The school has leading or participating role in many items of National key research plan (973) and National high-tech research plan (863) in the 11th '5-Year Plan'. 2 NSFC science fund for distinguished young scholars, 4 NSFC key research program, 2 NSFC key international cooperation program, 70 NSFC general research program. More than 20 national, provincial level scientific research and teaching resulting awards have been rewarded to the school, within which 'Physical-Chemical Behavior of Non-Major Elements and Formation Mechanism of NO2 During Coal Combustion 'won second prize of National Natural Technology Innovation Award, 'Technology of Stepwise Combustion in Recirculation Zone of Boiler' won a second prize of National Technology Innovation Award, and 'Control of Safety and Steady of Large Capacity Power System and Generator Units' won National Sci & Tech Progress Award ; 2 first prize awards and 3 second prize awards of provincial level; 2 first prize awards and 1 third prize of teaching resulting reward of provincial level. A considerable number of theses and monographs have been published, including more than 30 monographs, translations, textbooks, and over 2000 theses (in which 600 adopted by SCI , EI and ISTP). Led by the basic research on engineering thermo physics and supported by the research and development of energy and environment advanced technology, a completed scientific research system has come into being.

There are about 200 PhD students, 350 master students and 1,700 undergraduate students in the school. The school has built a student fostering system, with a good learning tradition and academic atmosphere, aiming at equipping students with solid interdisciplinary knowledge and strong ability in theories and applications, thus giving them wide job choices. Heat Transfer and Fundamentale of Devices in Energy and Power Engineering are among the best courses in the nation. Principles of Internal Combustion Engines is the excellent course in Hubei province. The subject of “Thermal Energy and Power” has been listed in the national plan for special disciple development. Over the last half century, the school has cultivated/graduated more than 13,000 students of high quality, many of them now are playing important roles in famous universities, enterprises, government agencies at home and abroad, making contributions to the progress of the society.

The school has established a long-team relationship with many famous universities and institutions from over 20 counties, including the US, England, France, Japan, Canada, Australia, Italy and Portugal. It has also encouraged many teachers to go abroad, studying, investigating, lecturing, collaborating in research and attending international academic conferences. The school also has foreign visiting scholars on regular basis. The school has held several international academic conferences in recent years.
