School of Chinese as a Second Language

Sun Yat-sen University, founded in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, is the leading university in South China. It is a comprehensive university providing higher education for studies in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technology, medical science, pharmacology and managerial science.
The teaching program for Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) in the University has enjoyed both promising development and favorable reputation since its initiation in early 1980s. The past two decades have witnessed the progress of the University's CFL teaching and training in various aspects.
In July 1981, the Center for Chinese Training was established as one of the earliest CFL teaching and training centers in China since the nation's opening-up and economic reform.
In 1984, the training center launched a program for Cantonese training, the first such program ever provided in Mainland China.
In 1991, the training center set up the first testing center for Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) in South China.
In 1992, the training center was renamed as the Center for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (CTCFL) and was affiliated to the newly formed School of Foreign Languages of the University in the same year.
On January 13, 2004, the School for Overseas Educational Exchange (SOEE) was established. Both the Center for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and the Administrative Office of International Students were merged into SOEE, which is responsible for the admission of international students for the entire University, CFL teaching and training as well as other projects of educational exchanges and international collaborations. Since then the CFL teaching and training in the University is enhanced to a new height.
SOEE is located on the South Campus, one of the four campuses of the University, along the south bank of the Pearl River in Guangzhou. The picturesque campus sceneries and advanced facilities make it an ideal place for study.
