Geographical Features and Brief History

Located in the lower reaches of the Yellow River and the Lubei Plain, Binzhou (pinyin: Bīnzhōu) is a prefecture-level city in northern Shandong province. Bordering the Bohai Sea to the north, Dongying to the east, Zibo to the south, Dezhou and Jinan to the west, Binzhou is renowned as Shandong's north gate.

Binzhou enjoys a long history, which can be traced back to the Neolithic Age. It was regarded as one of the cradles of the Yellow River Civilization and the Qi Civilization. The kingdom of Pugu was founded here in the Shang Dynasty, And in the Qin Dynasty, the county was set. From the Western Han Dynasty to the Republic of China, kingdom, province, prefecture, circuit and other local administrative divisions were set here in succession. During the Five Dynasties Period, Binzhou was established, whose name was derived from the fact that it was adjacent to the Bohai Sea.

In 1950, Huimin Region was set here which was then renamed Binzhou Region in 1992 and finally changed into Binzhou City after several reforms. Binzhou now administers 7 counties and 1 district, which covers an area of 9600 square kilometers and has a population of 3.69 million.

Culture and Tourism

Binzhou is well known for its splendid traditional folk arts, such as Lu Opera originated from Boxing, clay sculpture ,HuJi Assembly, wood engraving in Huimin, and artistic paper cutting. All of these are not only saturated with profound rural flavor but also boast its distinct artistic charm.

Simple folk customs and abundant personage can be found in Binzhou. Zouping County is the hometown of Fan Zhongyan, a famous statesman in the Song Dynasty. Hunmin County is the hometown of Sun Wu, a great ancient strategist. Boxing County is the hometown of Dongyong, a famous dutiful son in the Han Dynasty, which is the cradle of the culture of Filial Piety. Binzhou Today

Binzhou has sound agriculture. The five 1-million-mu bases of cotton, vegetable, winter date, aquatic product and grass have been built. Binzhou's industries are developing rapidly. Education

There are mainly three formal colleges in Binzhou: Binzhou Medical College, Binzhou College, and Binzhou Vocational College. There are also many private vocational schools in Binzhou. Among these schools, Binzhou Medical College (BMC) is one of the most reputed. Since foundation, BMC has fostered a tremendous number of talented graduates who are commended by all levels of society for their top quality, solid basic knowledge, creative spirit and practical competence. BMC has modernized the teaching means by optimizing speciality structures, revising teaching plans and syllabuses, and enhancing management standard. Consequently, one speciality and three courses are determined as pilot programs for instructional reforms in Shandong; 90% of the 5-year-program main courses have reached Class One standard; 31 items of teaching programs won Excellence Prize in Shandong. In 1997 and in 2001 with high scores BMC passed respectively the Teaching Appraisal and the Appraisal of Management Conditions and Teaching Quality organized by the Education Department of Shandong. Over the last few years 99% of graduates passed College English Test Band 4 and 60% passed Band 6; In College Computer Test 98% got E (Excellence) and no one failed. Every year at least 25% of the 5-year-program graduates are admitted as postgraduates, the percentage even gets to 50 in the speciality of stomatology.
