School of Life Science

The School of Life Science was established in April of 2004. Driven by the demand of the national space, aviation and navigation industries and supported by core subjects within the life sciences, the principles of this school’s development combines the basic disciplines with technology and engineering, integrates research with practical applications, and makes great efforts to operate as a high-quality teaching center with an excellent research base.

The school focuses on the research and teaching of Space Biology, Space Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, and Aerospace Biomedical Engineering. The school conducts research focused upon the basic laws of the molecular, cellular and biological phenomena on the general level, as well as the application and development of pharmaceutical biotechnology and bio-medical engineering products. The school recognizes the important advantages of an interdisciplinary approach and has formed research teams composed of young professors across disciplines to promote innovation and creativity.

During the implementation of Project 985, the School of Life Sciences obtained 30 million Yuan and constructed the Space Biotechnology Laboratory as an innovative platform at both the provincial and ministerial level. In 2007, the laboratory was selected as one of the first group included in the National Defense Key Laboratory for Space Bioscience & Biotechnology, and approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The laboratory is the first key laboratory among all Chinese universities, which specialize in space biology and biotechnology.

During the past several years, the school has undertaken twelve programs of National Natural Science Foundation, 8 of 863 Project, one space science project, one New Century Excellent Talent project, one Outstanding Young Teacher project, nine national post-doctoralissues, four projects at the provincial-level, two projects at the municipal level, and eight horizontal issues. Altogether 110 papers have been published, in which 27 articles were indexed by the SCI and 11 by the EI, with 85 published by conference and 29 have applied for patents.
