College of Electrical Engineering

The College of Electrical Engineering, Chongqing University dates back to the Department of Electrical Machinery, or the Department of Electrical Engineering, which was established in 1936. In 1940, the Department of Electrical Machinery was divided into two departments: the Department of Electrical Machinery and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 1953, Chongqing University decided to establish the Department of Telecommunications based on the Department of Electrical Machinery. In 1955 all the students and a majority of the teachers who offered specialized courses were transferred to Beijing. Those teachers were then joined with teachers from the Department of Radio, Tianjin University, to form Beijing Institute of Post and Telecommunications. Afterwards, Chongqing University reestablished the Department of Electrical Machinery. Apart from the undergraduate programs of Power Plant, Power Grid and Power System, the program of Electrical Machinery was added.

Famous scholars like Shui Xiheng, Feng Jian, Min Qijie, Wu Darong, Liu Yilun, Wang Jiqiang and Jiang Zejia, etc., have laid a solid foundation for the College of Electrical Engineering and developed a highly professional research tradition. Professor Jiang Zejia is a distinguished scholar in electrical theories in China, and bears high prestige in the field of Electrical Engineering. From 1951 to 1982, Professor Jiang Zejia was the Dean of the Department of Electrical Machinery. His attitude of doing scholarly research, his style of being strict with himself and being scrupulous about every detail have significant and far-reaching influence over students and teachers in the Department of Electrical Machinery.

After the reform and opening-up, the Department of Electrical Machinery renamed itself the Department of Electrical Engineering and the College of Electrical Engineering successively. Three academic orientations were developed: a. High Voltage and Insulation Techniques; b. Electrical Theories and New Technology of Engineering; c. Power Electronics and Power Drive. After merging with the Department of Electrical Engineering of the former Chongqing Jianzhu University, one more sub-discipline “Architectural Electrical Engineering and Intelligence” was added. Xu Guoyu, Yang Shunchang, Zeng Xiangren, Sun Caixin, Shu Lichun, Zhou Luowei worked as the Dean of the Department or the College successively, and they have made great contributions to the development of the College.
