The School of Civil and Architectural Engineering



About the school 

  The School of Civil and Architectural Engineering of University of Jinan was founded in August 2001. There are many departments such as Civil Engineering, Architecture, Municipal Engineering, and Mechanics and Experiment Center. The school has three postgraduate programs in Structure Engineering, Municipal Engineering and Disaster Protection and Reduction and four undergraduate programs in Civil Engineering, Water Science and Engineering, Architecture, City Planning. The major of Structure Engineering is an important discipline at school level. Water Science and Engineering is a discipline with distinctive features at school level. There are 81 faculty members in the school, including 15 PhDs and 34 Masters. There are 1830 students in the school now.


  The school has laboratories in mechanics, soil mechanics, hydraulics, water supplying and draining engineering, geotechnical, structure engineering, surveying, building materials, city planning model, and computer, which occupy about 1,300 square meters. Investment on equipments in laboratories is about 5 billion Yuan. The school has three research institutes (New Technology on Engineering Strengthening, Municipal Environment and Geo-Engineering, Admixture in Concrete), and one First Class Building Material Inspecting and Testing Center of Shandong Province.


  We have carried through the Party’s education policy in teaching and scientific researching for many years. Maintaining a good atmosphere in teaching and learning, we focus on character training and pay attention to the cultivation of students’ comprehensive ability. Many students obtain national and provincial awards. The school has received two first awards for Practical Investigation and Research Report of National Advanced City Planning Major in 2004, and one first award in the Ninth “Challenge Cup” Undergraduates Science and Technology Contest in 2005. About 30% of our graduates pass the examination to pursue their Master Degree, and 90% get satisfying work every year. Many of them enter postgraduate schools of famous universities such as Zhejiang University, Tongji University, and Tianjin University etc. Besides, several graduates have become leaders, because of their excellent work, in construction corporations in Jinan.


  The school takes charge of many research projects at the national and provincial level in which we have received two provincial awards on Science and Technology Progress, several awards on Teaching Achievement and some patents. We publish 8 teaching books, and 4 national construction methods and codes. Fifty papers are published every year.

  Keeping undergraduate education as the centre, the school pushes graduate education forward, and improves teaching quality. We are doing our best to build the highest qualified School of Civil and Architectural Engineering in Shandong.

 

 

Research Institute



Research Institute for Municipal Environment and Geo-Engineering 
Research Institute for Municipal Environment and Geo-Engineering of University of Jinan aims at solving environmental and geo-engineering problems related to municipal construction, and giving technical consulting services by using research achievement and engineering experience. The head of the Institute is associate professor Liu Junyan. Current research fields include:



design optimizing of foundation pit; 
monitoring of foundation pit; 
key techniques on monitoring and safety warning of foundation pit; 
application of soil-nailing wall and composite soil-nailing wall; 
techniques of checking and measuring of piles; 

foundation treatment and strengthening; 

promotion and application of new technology in civil engineering construction 


The research on foundation pit is obtaining many achievements now. Associate professor Liu Junyan is the chief editor of Shandong Engineering Construction Code “Technical Code of Monitoring on Foundation Pit Engineering” (DBJ14-024-2004) which has been published and implemented in Shandon since August 1st, 2004. This code is the first standard on monitoring technique of foundation pit in China and reaches leading level nationally. He has written an academic book Deep Foundation Pit Engineering, and a textbook High-rise Building Construction (Deep Foundation Pit Section) which is widely used by Chinese universities. 


We are in a leading position on application research of composite soil-nailing wall and are pushing forward the implementation of this technique in Shandong. We have much experience in optimizing foundation pit design and information-oriented construction that could cut the construction cost sharply while assuring safety. 


We are compiling the national standard “Technical Code of Monitoring on Foundation Pit Engineering” and provincial standard “Construction And Acceptance Code of Composite Soil-Nailing Wall” now.
