SICAS Interview with Ms. Zhu Ziqiang--Vice President of East China Normal University (ECNU)

Since established under the authorization of the largest number of China's top-ranking universities, SICAS has established reliable partnerships with more than 200 first-rate universities in China, including East China Normal University. On March 15, 2011, SICAS CEO Ms Zhanglu and SICAS School Liaison Department staff members met with Ms. Zhu Ziqiang--Vice President of ECNU, during which she accepted an exclusive SICAS interview.

What follows is a transcript of the conversation which has been slightly condensed, and edited for clarity:

Host: First of all, thank you obviously for your time, Ms. Zhu. Could you please give us a brief introduction of ECNU?
Ms. Zhu: Sure. East China Normal University is a key University directly under the auspices of the Ministry of Education. It is listed as a member of the "985 project" and "211 project" (National key University). The University is situated in the down town of Shanghai and is well known as a Garden University for its beautiful campus.

Host: What about ECNU faculty?
Ms. Zhu: Well, East China Normal University is a comprehensive and research University with strong faculty. It has 1,700 full time teachers, including 1,100 professors and associate professors. Covering the academic area of Science, liberal arts, management, engineering, law, education, philosophy, history and economy, The University now has 19 full-time schools, consists of 44 departments offering 61 undergraduate programs, 130 doctoral programs and 170 Master's programs, nearly 13500 undergraduates, 8900 post graduates and about 2700 long-term and short-term International students.

Host: What are characteristics of ECNU?
Ms. Zhu: East China Normal University owns the state base for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. It is also pointed by the office of overseas Chinese of the State Council as the Chinese teaching center. The online school of Chinese Language jointly run by the University and the National office of TCFL has become the biggest website in the world for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

Host: Ah, great! Are there any English-medium programs at ECNU?
Ms. Zhu: Of course yes. Bachelor's degree program International Communication (English) is an ECNU specialty provided for those who worry about language barrier.

Host: How about other programs?
Ms. Zhu: In addition to the English-medium specialty Bachelor's degree program International Communication, there are a total of 368 degree programs, including 67 bachelor’s degree programs, 182 master’s degree programs and 119 doctoral degree programs, all taught in pure Chinese available at ECNU.

Host: Well, it seems that programs provided at ECNU are various for International students to choose from. Who should they turn to in case of problems once they have come to study at ECNU in China?
Ms. Zhu: That's what I want to introduce to you next, the International Students Office. The International Students Office of East China Normal University is a specialized division in charge of the enrollment, admission, administrative affairs of the foreign students. The main responsibilities are formulating policies for the foreign students' administration as well as organizing training, guidance and coordination of the management based on the university's blueprint for developing foreign students' education.

Host: Sounds helpful. Please tell us more.
Ms. Zhu: OK. The International Students Office consists of two parts: the Students' Enrollment sector and the Students' General Affairs Administration sector.
The Students' Enrollment sector is in charge of the entire administration and coordination work for degree-studying foreign students from their admission to graduation, the following affairs are involved: enrollment; visa management; online counseling, email service; statistics, system maintenance; educational administrative management with the collaboration of the Academic Affairs Office and the Graduate School; scholarship students’ enrollment, administration, assessment and distribution of their allowance; students' archiving. The Students' General Affairs Administration sector involve the following responsibilities: project development; reception of short-term visiting delegations, projects' follow-up services; large events; information collection of graduates; international exchanges; updating and maintenance of the website; logistics coordination and the other related administrative work.

Host: Well, anything else?
